Each of the past three centuries was dominated by a single new technology.
The 18th century was the era of the great mechanical systems accompanying the
Industrial Revolution. The 19th century was the age of the steam engine. During
the 20th century, the key technology was information gathering, processing, and
distribution. Among other developments, we saw the installation of worldwide
telephone networks, the invention of radio and television, the birth and unprecedented
growth of the computer industry, the launching of communication satellites,
and, of course, the Internet.
As a result of rapid technological progress, these areas are rapidly converging
in the 21st century and the differences between collecting, transporting, storing,
and processing information are quickly disappearing. Organizations with hundreds
of offices spread over a wide geographical area routinely expect to be able
to examine the current status of even their most remote outpost at the push of a
button. As our ability to gather, process, and distribute information grows, the demand
for ever more sophisticated information processing grows even faster.

>>
>>65011184
I like RYM because I'm not stuffed with what, 6 reviews per page of which the first page is 3 most upvoted reviews from ELi Hayes caps lock cruising..

RYM has lots of faults like film site is nearly hidden and this results to small userbase for it (and it's music site first anyway) so there's no big film community and those two are my only annoyances with it.

I check out about 4-5 reviewers on Letterboxd few times a week and I check nobody in RYM, just log and write reviews of my own.

The film forums are decent to good in RYM and Sharifi replies with 24 to 36 hours if you have good feedback idea and is active developer, unlike lbXD staff.

I see The New World in your favorites. I've been working my way through Malick's filmography for the first time in order to see Knight of Cups. Badlands and Days of Heaven were good, but I could honestly take or leave.

But, The Thin Red Line was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Now I find myself with The New World up next, but I'm having trouble convincing myself to watch it. Maybe it's the runtime or the setting, I don't know. What can you tell me about it? Maybe get me hyped enough to watch it

Popular movies are fine to like; they're popular for a reason. But think of your favorites list as a sentence. For example, using popular movies would be like saying "The dog was there." As you develop your cinematic vocabulary, you can refine that statement to be more personal. "The dog was there" turns into "The English Bulldog was there." Eventually, you'll have a filmic phrase all your own such as "The English Bulldog lounged inside the Gothic cathedral." A long was from "The dog was there," and much more interesting to someone else. The kind of phrase that would want to make them learn more about you and why that phrase is special to you.

Like verbal vocabulary, we're always picking up new pieces and definitions of filmic vocabulary, so don't worry about where you are right now, just keep learning more 'words.' Eventually the search for words becomes more important than using the words themselves, and having an interesting personal phrase becomes an added bonus to those you surround yourself with.

Don't worry, I'm fairly new to movies as well. Not bad choices at all, just very "entry level" for lack of a better term. If you lurk around here long enough in addition to doing some research on your own, you could get a real nice list going of movies to watch and expand your taste. I've got a list of more than I know what to do with

>>65013092

I have a friend who gave it five stars.
>>
>>65013325
You're taking it too literally. The more popular the favorite choices are, the less of an individual statement it makes because so many other people are saying the same thing.

How old are you? I'm curious. I mean, it's so weird to be new to movies and wonder what the classics are and such. It's such attained knowledge to me by now, it's weird to think of a time in which I didn't know about these things...

Personally, I use it mainly for the log. It's a convinient way to keep track of everything I've watched. I'm not following or being followed by anyone, so my rankings are for myself only. I understand that not all "4 star" movies are the same caliber, but it helps me compare everything I've watched. I can also create lists to consolidate things I want to watch, or need it watch again.
