Out of curiosity how old are you? I was 22 when the first one came out and I thought it was average. But I remember the hype surrounding it and the lesson I learned from the mediocre reveal that was the movie itself: the more a movie has to rely on how it's shrouded in mystery and attempted viral internet hype, the less actual substance it has. If it had a good story and good acting they wouldn't need to rely so heavily on snake oil salesmanship techniques and they'd just tell you about the movie.
