The romance between Maria and the captain was really contrived. IRL she only married him for the kids' sake and that's what it should've been in the movie also.

This.
It's horrible
I have honestly no idea why it's so popular
It must be a women/gay thing
Are there any other movies set in pre-war Austria?

It sucks.

Nice loaded question

I just remember it creeping me out when I was a little kid, cheerio songs and dancing to death and war. Then again probably not a kids movie.

it's the coziest movie in existence

One of my favourite musicals. Julie Andrews is an ultra qt in it. Bitch can bloody sing.
The songs are 10/10 but the love story feels forced. Well I guess they needed to thicken the plot a bit, so I can forgive it.
However, the last 45 minutes, everything afterthe wedding, was useless. No new song and they needlessly put a dark WW2 atmosphere in what was a very nice family movie.
Ruined it a bit for me, but still a 7/10 overall, the beginning is cozy.

So much this. It's like the second half of Full Metal Jacket, needless darkness in what was supposed to be a family film about working out in boot camp.
