The alien races and alien animals in TFA don't really resemble Star Wars. Star Wars aliens tend to have a particular look to them, both the sentients and the beasts. TFA's aliens all look like they were ripped off some other franchise's aliens.
And they didn't even bring back Twi'leks, Biths, Sullustans, etc.

I thought they looked like D&D monsters. The whole thing had a rather D&D feel to it, which makes me greatly anticipate the Darths And Droids version.
There was another D&D-esque part in the movie, at the end when Rey "uses the force" and closes her eyes to do a little meditation thing before beating Kylo in a saber fight. That was her levelling up, buying and then immediately using Battle Meditation, which anyone who has played KotOR will remember is a broken-as-fuck buff/debuff power.

I thought the scavenging aspect was cool. A planet that's basically a graveyard for shipwrecks from a giant battle, that's a good idea. The only part that I thought showed the planet in an uncreative way was Finn's walk, where it was just all desert, but all the other scenes had interesting stuff going on (Rey's introduction, sleigh-riding on the dunes, Rey's AT-AT hovel, the scavenger who tries to take BB-8, the outpost, the battle station wreck). For how little exposition there was and how little time was spent there, Jakku was pretty well depicted.

The buildings on Jakku looked completely different from the dome, sandstone stucco structures on Tatooine. They had fabrics and tents and open air markets, whereas on Tatooine everything was closed in buildings. They didn't even have a spaceport on Jakku.
They also emphasized it was not Tatooine by showing the single sun over and over.
Also, Hoth looked like the Arctic. Starkiller Base surface looked like Rocky Mountain National Park with all the forests.
Both environments IRL have snow, but are completely different ecosystems. In the movie it was obviously the same.

What did you want? Her to scavenge on a water planet? It would be difficult to gather working parts that way or even make it to shipwrecks.

But if you go film on location at a grasslands, it would make it fucking obvious you were on the African Savannah or the plains of the USA, because they are so unique looking. And thus immersion could be broken.
