Rei should've just found the lightsaber in a downed imperial ship on Jakku. That would've made more sense, since the Imperials were taking over Cloud City right before they left in ESB. Then, when she meets Han, he could've been like "I've seen that before. Let me take you to someone who knows about it." And they could've gone straight to the Rebel base to meet Leia, skipping this whole fucking whatever it was supposed to be cantina scene.
