What is it about Star Destroyers that makes them so cool? You see one and you just want to see it fuck things up.

It's well designed. Has a form that speaks of its function and the personality of those who use it.
Additionally it looks surprisingly real for a miniature movie prop.
Star destroyers are pretty underrated in terms of design and aesthetic tbqh

No one is using their eyes to detect ships in space. Heat signatures are a dead giveaway in space where nothing radiates heat naturally other than stars and planets. Also light from a star would light up even a pitch black object like a Christmas tree.

It's a scifi design based on ships skyscrapers and industrial equipment, whereas most of what's done today is scifi designs based on scifi designs based on scifi designs.
I got to have dinner with one of the guys who designed the star destroyer once. He talked a lot about how the visual design for these and the borg cubes and some other shit relies on having a lot of squareish ins and outs to look imposing but industrial, it radiates "power." I don't remember the term he used for it unfortunately, the boxy in and out complex roughness of the surface.

that's not a ladder. obviously it would be far too large for any person. it's some kind of sensor array.
