With the MCU it's different. You can just watch Iron Man, Thor, or Captain America movies and not really miss anything.
Rogue One, Han Solo, Boba Fett and all these other spin-offs aren't separate series. None of them make sense if you're not familiar with the core episodic Star Wars films.
Marvel and DC can work as cinematic universes because they're just adaptations of shared comic book universes. Making a shared universe of multiple series is just a way of maintaining accuracy between the comics and their film adaptations.

Making Star Wars into a cinematic universe like this will never work. I'm sure they're thinking "If it worked for Marvel, why can't it work for Star Wars?" The answer is because with Marvel, the individual stories came first and then they were combined into crossovers.
Marvel made a standalone film about a rich playboy who makes a robot suit. Then, they made a standalone film about a scientist who turns into a big green monster. Then, they made a couple more standalone films like "Man With the Magic Hammer" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Nazi Germany". All of these are treated as standalone, unrelated stories. There are mild hints that they take place in the same universe, but it just feels like an afterthought. Then, they hyped the fuck out of their audience by announcing that Robot Playboy, Green Scientist, Hammer Man, and Mr. Smith are all going to team up for a common goal in a crossover film. It sounded like the coolest thing ever.
With Star Wars, it's like we have this cool, classic series of seven films that the audience loves, and they're hopelessly trying to milk it further by asking "Hey, what if that werewolf from the cantina in A New Hope had his own movie?" or "Wouldn't you like to see the life and times of Jabba's pet rat thing from Return of the Jedi?" Now that they're making it a cinematic universe, it's like the crossovers came first and then the standalone film were an afterthought.

This is all true, but I have to compare it to the marvel movies. Oversaturated and while they're all good movies on their own, they just aren't "special". They just good in a decent sort of way. Expected. Mundane. That's what star wars will be. Just another marvel movie. Just another madden or call of duty. Always being "good enough", playing it safe and never being bad but also never being absolutely fantastic. That's where I see this going.

Lucas only put his foot down because he was tired of all of the fan hate. For a man who made more money off this stupid movie than most countries entire existences, he sure had a reality check that money can't buy that sort of respect.
When you get to be his age, you want a legacy because young pussy and parties full of guests that brown nose you become meaningless the more exposed you are to it.
