Sorry, I'd still think Inarritu were mediocre even without his recognition. I didn't particularly like any of his movies before his success with Birdman. I developed my opinion of Birdman before its critical acclaim.
The "contrarian" meme/boogeyman isn't real. I also like movie that are quite popular. Inarritu uses very overt artistic elements and "artistic" cinematography, which lets people who haven't been watching movies long go "wow, so artsy, really pretty!!!11!" But they really aren't remarkable in terms of creativity, cinematography or otherwise if you have any sort of substantial film background.
