It's not a big stretch to see some THX in this scene. It certainly has some of the same grand sense of imagination, as though we are touching an alien universe that is larger and deeper than our own.

I believe one of Lucas's biggest mistakes in the prequels was leaving so much lore out of the movies. While character backstories like those of Dooku and Grievous are necessary to fully understand the prequels, and were in fact the conceptual work of Lucas's own mind, he left it to the EU others to fully explain these characters. It ruined the narrative flow of the movies and sabotaged characters who could have been great on screen.

As such, small touches of lore like the legend of Darth Plagueis are exactly what these movies needed to be better. Of course, it would really be ace if these stories could be told in a format other than the dreaded "two guys giving expository dialogue to one another", but Ian McDiarmid really made it work.

Star Wars prequel trilogy is painted in broad brush strokes. It is played out a mammoth stage by actors with megaphones. It is Big and Bold. It is outrageously epic geographically and emotionally. The symbolism is grand too and because it is in keeping with the story's sweep it does not unbalance the story.

At the Opera House, the Mon Calamari put on a show where sperm-like ribbons float in and out of a massive watery egg. The discussion between the Chancellor and Anakin about the creation of life cements the visual message.

"Ironic isn't it? ...He could save others but not himself" - Sheev

"He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One" - Priest Luke 23:35

The director George Lucas uses the language of Christian heritage, words already resonant with meaning, as stepping stones to a greater understanding. In this way he subtly illuminates for us the roles, the motivations and the size of what is at stake.

American Graffiti isn't exactly obscure.

The worst thing to ever happen to George Lucas was star wars being saved in editing. If it had just flopped, or never been made, he would could have spent the last four decades being a working director.

I grew up with the OT, and it's a part of my manchildhood, but I'd like to visit the parallel dimension where he made the moves he talked about wanting to make before star wars took over.

Both of the kinos listed there are by the avant-garde director Stan Brakhage. Essentially he didn't even film anything-- he created his work frame-by-frame, manually painting them. You can watch many of them online:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61SzOGVdOnk

The word 'kinography' itself was coined, afaik, by Soviet director Vertov, and refers to a cinema of motion ('kinien' is greek for 'move' and is the root of 'cinema')
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_with_a_Movie_Camera#Vertov.27s_intentions

Yea, I guess that was it. The lines are terrible, but Palpatine guy at least does something with them.

>>64390904
It's not loose at all you babbylord, only the Color scenes are kinda abstract but they still pretty straightforward in what they were trying to convey: "Bowman races across vast distances of space, viewing bizarre cosmological phenomena and strange landscapes of unusual colors."

The apartment scene after that is an illusion the aliens created to observe Bowman and judge humankind's maturity.
Satisfied, they transformed him into the Star Child which basically serves as the ambassador and the link between humans and the aliens.
>>
>>64390894
It was the worst film of the OT you pleb.
>>
>>64390314
I feel like George was, in a way, trying to keep the mass appeal of the OT without a lot of the things that made it great. He should have just played to his strengths and really made the PT a fairly distinct entity from the OT. Unfortunately, he tried to have his cake and eat it too, and now the PT is distinct from the OT for all the wrong reasons.

Anon it's a matter of classification that exists because "Film" is an "artform" as well as being a a business.

So think about a painting. You could just go "Meh, it's paint on a canvas, whats the big deal" but if you're a person interested in visual arts "painting" is a very broad definition, and can be subdivided into schools of philosophy, historical period, medium, subject matter, self-awareness, etc.

If you're talking about "things that come out in the theater, and red box" then "Movies" is an acceptable catch all term. But if you're into studying the medium itself its worth familiarizing yourself with vague classifications based on intent.

Is it art produced for art's sake? Or is it a commodity being sold in a market? Or is it somewhere in between.

You can't really judge the Avengers as "art" since it never pretends to be, its there to make money and entertain an audience. Two girls, one cup was made as an art piece seriously.

Meanwhile JJ just remade ANH with the dankest star wars memes that all the normies could cheer about.

That is it. Hamil, Ford, and Fisher all shit on Lucas' directing ability. I think it was Carrie Fisher who said the only words he knows are "faster and more intense". Now imagine you're standing on a green screen completely imagining and playing off of what ILM might do. It's insane.

I've said as much. Unfortunately with the actually quality of the prequels factored in, the overall effort is akin to John Willaims scoring for kazoos.

What the fuck are you talking about? It was one of the most insanely idiotic moments of the whole prequel trilogy.

>Palpatine starts acting like a total creepo talking about Siths and Anakin doesn't react at all. Like he doesn't even raise an eyebrow.
>then Palpatine says this Sith Lord supposedly had exactly what Anakin needs to save Padme and Anakin doesn't pick up on this very obvious conman's scheme that's going on which makes him look like a massive retard
>Palpatine basically admits he's a Sith Lord and Anakin doesn't immediately leap into action

Did Anakin completely forget about the opening scene of the film where Palpatine told him to kill Count Duku, his servant? Could he not piece two and two together and tell that that whole scene was a set up? Did he forget that Palpatine told him to let Obiwan die? Did Anakin completely shut his brain off for this scene to happen?

>she allies herself with a Sith named Ventress and realizes they have a lot in common, Ventress having been abandoned by Dooku and Ashoka having been abandoned by the Jedi Council
>Ashoka gets captured and would be found guilty if Anakin hadn't tracked down the real culprit (with Ventress's help)

It's not about the quality of the films, it's about the passion behind them. Lucas wanted to further commercialize the Star Wars franchise with the sequels but he truly cared about the universe he created and the overarching themes of the story, things that wouldn't cross the care of the simple masses that would be drawn by the increased appeal of the prequels.

So why did he do it? Because Star Wars was important to him, he had a vision for his creation, even if tainted.

It was Lucas's false pretense that he could appeal to the most common denominator more while keeping the trilogy's quality up, his arrogance and his helpers' fear of criticizing him that let him go ahead with awful ideas that tarnished the prequels, but even so you can tell they had spirit behind them.

All that soul is raped by Disney and JJ in particular, who only see Star Wars as a product and soul as a technical requirement to fill.

You can very easily make that argument about Disney (and I'd agree), but JJ does seem to be a genuine fan of the series, and most of the people working on it were die hard fans of the saga, and had a serious passion for their work.

It's not animation. He had a specific vision for what he wanted to see on the frames. It was actually really innovative. He did all kinds of his own little paintings and designs on the individual film reels. He scratched on them with razor blades, soaked them in water colors, traced leaves and grass on them, chopped and set different layers on them and all kids of shit. Stan Brakhage is the man.
