Damn it, is / ever right about anything?

/tv/ has terrible tastes. Ex Machina is one of the best sci-fi films since Europa Report.

I've seen tons of fedoras here praising babbies first or second AI compared to humans movie, silly.

This was literally an anime. It's been done a million times in that medium and this was just as stupid. How anyone could think it's "deep" or "makes you think" is beyond me.
>>
>>64369682
No, anime is stupid and has poor characterization because it doesn't involve direction of real humans. Saying anime is good is like saying books are good. Really, the supermajority of them aren't. Directing a film with dozens of participants is a lot different from writing/drawing stupid shit and then getting it published.

This was a genuinely great film.

Referencing Wittgenstein's Blue Book, or anything about Wittgenstein that rarely ever come across the medium, kind of qualify the overall movie as something only a few can appreciate.

If Ex Machina was all I had access to as a child in terms of sci-fi I probably would become one of those crazy fanboys, but thankfully I had access to anime from very early on in my youth years and my mental balance is very stable.

Seriously, if you have watched Akira, you'd realize just how sophisticated anime is and it blows away anything Ex Machina would have to offer.

A lot of people mention Ghost In The Shell, which has just enough of sexuality in the mix to draw in the western audience I suppose but I must say that Ghost In The Shell is not even in my top 10 anime, not even close, that's just how deep the world of anime is.

Some anime is so disturbingly mature like Fractale that I wish it would challenge the system and submit it as a Drama category in the Oscars just to bitchslap the snotty Academy.

It's not just the level of maturity and sophistication anime has, it's also quite original, entertaining, and visually fantastic. I would regard anime as the highest form of cinema art-form.

But hey, me preaching about anime won't do you any good, you gotta go out and see it for yourself just how much you are missing.

The recent one I would recommend to check out is Sword Art Online which is light and easy to get into anime for the first time yet appreciate it as much, but if you want the heavy stuff right off the line check out Guilty Crown in which the plot is so complex and twisted that you'll need extra oxygen pumped into your brain in order to comprehend everything, and if you want amazing visuals and a gripping drama that also has awesome mecha battles Aldnoah Zero is the shit.

Seriously, if you know anime like I do, Ex Machina looks like it's something for little kids...

When did I say anime was good? I said that the entire plot and idea has been done lots of times to varying degrees of success in anime. Regardless of your opinions on that medium, the movie had pretty much copied shit like ghost in the shell and shit like chobits (le sexy robot girl). It was shallow and stupid. Congrats on getting me to reply to such obvious bait tho. 4.74/10

The scene with Jay dancing with the robot is one of the greatest sequences in a sci-fi movie since 2001. I'm serious. It's fucking genius.

In what sense? He had committed to being Ava's knight in shining armour only when she convinced him of her sentience. He had no interest in acquiring his own Kyoko.
>>
>>64370677

It didn't feel like it jived with his character. They never really introduced the "vulnerable and hopeless romantic" aspect of his character. He was just a scientist who had a scientific interest. He should have been smarter to resist and not act in the way he did. There was no set up for that happening, just in his conversations with Ava he just fell for her. Someone of his level should know better.

He was actually just a really skilled programmer with an interest in machine learning (and its associated mathematics). He described his romance-free childhood in response to a question posed by Ava.
I thought this part was quite realistic because I myself am a programmer with a very similar childhood, and am surrounded by coworkers with a similar childhood. It absolutely nailed the hotshot startup coder archetype.

>multi-billion dollar research facility run by archaic keycards
i agree this is stupid
>no support staff at all
it's clearly his character, the isolated drunkard genius type. he doesn't want anyone else there with him.
>nobody checking in or at least dropping supplies on a regular basis
he's CEO of the biggest tech giant in the world. who's checking in on him? he does what he wants. supply drops can happen without being acknowledged in the film, jfc.
>helicopter guy taking robot away without asking any questions at all when he's supposed to be picking up someone else
there's a deleted scene that explains this. number one, the pilot is ordered to go and pick up one person and return with one person. not ask questions. number two, the purpose of the scene was to show she is able to manipulate whoever she wants. how did you not get this?

got any more?
>>
>>64370983

I just think he should have been more mentally prepared for Avas mental attacks. He demonstrates good knowledge of AI, so why would he not expect her to be lying to him? I understand that he fell for her because nobody ever really talked to him like that, but its not really too believable. It didn't detract too much for me, I think this movie is close to being a masterpiece, but it did make me question his logic a bit.

You make it sound like he's the robot. Stop projecting. He empathized with Ava and her confinement. (And of course he did--as should you--because Ava is actually played by a human pretending to be a robot that thinks it's a human.)
>>
>>64371298

It was just so wonderfully surreal. It completely solidifies the notion that the Caleb (and the audience) already have: something really fucked up is going on here. So dream like, very Lynchian. The perfect way to ease the viewer into the uncomforting idea that something very very off is happening. Genius may be a bit overhyping it, but it is an insanely clever and well done scene.

Does anyone have a webm of Ava in the dress and wig? She was so qt.

half of them are adaptaed from mangas. In those cases /a/ doesn't give a shit about the usually poorly executed anime adaptation.

Still it's funny how they usually trash those mangas/anime, while still producing countless of posts. Pretty much like /tv/'s attitude with Star Wars, or anything.

fair point

i just have such a low opinion of the average /tv/ poster that i think it's possible that they could believe that any film with a, even only in appearance, female character who isn't a sack of useless shit plotwise is 'feminist garbage'

i swear it's really the fucking SJW types who make this kind of comment, to taint the waters and make the valid comments about the cringeworthy forced inclusion of female/non-white characters look less credible
>>
>>64370733
Nigga, Caleb was getting his emotions all caught up. He states he never really had a relationship before and the fact that she's also based on technology which probably got him a little wet as well. Nathan even called him out for wanting to fuck her (which don't blame him.).

In the end he fell
