>George RR Martin about to release info regarding The Winds of Winter

GET HYPE

>So... where was I? Oh, the lost post. Well, the title was simply "2015." It was meant to be a review of my entire year, personal and professional. And yes, I talked about WINDS, but I talked about a lot of things as well. That was the sort of year it was.
>>
Does anyone really give a shit what he writes at this point? D&D have the details, D&D command a larger audience (including the Queen of England and POTUS Barack Obama -- neither of whom have read the books), and D&D have superseded GRRM as the true authors of the series.

He should just watch football for the rest of his life, his books LITERALLY don't matter anymore.
>>
What the fuck, hes just toying with us now.

I do, because DnD are hacks and shit at writing and dont understand any of the characters.

GRRM should just finish writing the chapters that feature story lines that have been altered (like everything involving Stannis) characters who were cut (Victarian and JonCon/Aegon) and POVs of characters that were killed early, like Selmy whose story I am still hype for. That we we know what happens with those stories, everything else we can get from the show.
>>
So what are some other George RR Martin stories worth reading? I've read Meathouse Men, The Pear Shaped Man, and The Ice Dragon. All three I found very good for what they were in the anthology of Dreamsongs I've got. I've thought about getting into his other universe too where he has set different sci-fi stories in since I quite like the theme of collective conscious vs individualism.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS RELEASED

>The heroes and villains of Westeros return in this epic continuation of the acclaimed fantasy series. A wounded Lord Manderly is deciding which meal he should serve tonight, roasted pheasant stuffed with plum and garnished with cream gravy or sautéed snail pie with helpings of riverland potatoes cooked in goose fat? Packed with all the descriptions of food and Daenery's diarrhea fans have been waiting for, the latest volume hits shelves on March 21st 2017

He obviously lost his passion.

Before Feast for Crows he was a FAST writer. Not just regular pace, FAST for the length and quality of what he was writing. 11 years for the two worst books in the series.
>>
>>64361496
I agree. Though I admit I haven't really looked into it seriously, it seems like he's lost interest in writing the books, and is fairly content to let the story play out as a television show.

Which is unfortunate, because I find the show boring.
>>
>>64361659
Wasn't he a TV writer originally?
>>
>>64361696
Maybe...again, haven't looked into it...that would be intriguing, might explain some things. I've always thought of him as more of a Science Fiction writer too. Don't know how accurate that is based on his past.
>>
>>64361496
AFFC and ADWD have the 2 best character arcs in the entire series.

I don't think he's lost his passion, if he lost his passion he wouldn't have added all of the depth and world building that those 2 books did, he'd have kept it as a contained story and finished it quickly.

Maybe it's got too big for him, with way too many plot lines, but I don't think he's just got bored
>>
>>64356314
>I like to be contrarian on everything I post on 4chan.

>>
>>64361872
>Maybe it's got too big for him, with way too many plot lines, but I don't think he's just got bored

this is it i think. he messed up with the 5 year gap and he can't figure how to write himself out of it without extending the series to 10 books. thats the reason for the delay not boredom or lack of interest.

people call him lazy but i don't think its an issue of hard work. he's just lost control of the story, as sad as that is to say.
>>

Trying to think of all the plot points Gurm has to somehow advance in TWOW:

>Dany and the Khal
>Tyrion at Mereen with his gf (and Brown Ben Plumb + mercs)
>The battle of fire
>Victarion trying to take Dany
>Aegon invading Westeros
>JonCon and his greyscale
>Doran's plotting in Dorne
>Darkstar on the run
>Arianne traveling
>Arya with the faceless men
>Sam and Gilly in Oldtown
>The Maester plots
>Cersei's trial
>Tyrell plotting
>Jaime and Brienne in the Riverlands
>Auranne Waters and the missing fleet
>The Corsair King/Shrouded Lord
>Lady Stoneheart and BWB
>Sansa and Littlefinger in the vale
>The Hound
>Stannis' claim for the throne
>Asha/Theon
>Manderly plotting
>Northern conspiracy
>Rickon and Osha
>Jeyne Westerling
>Edmure Tully in Casterly Rock
>Boltons in Winterfell
>Jon's ressurection
>Bran in the tree
>Mance Rayder and his plots
>Night's Watch
>Patchface and whatever happens with him
>Whatever Children of the Forest are doing
>The Others
>The Faceless Men's dragon plot
>The Sandsnakes infiltrating places
>Euron

A couple can probably be merged, and I probably forgot a couple, but that's a ridiculous number of subplots he needs to close up, before he even gets to the final fight.

Thank fuck Quentyn is dead
>>
Yeah the 5 year gap fucked him hard.

He had a rough plan for the entire plot and where the characters would go it's just it included a 5 year dead zone that he was just going to skip.

Then he ran up to and realized he couldn't just time skip it and now has to fill in all the holes he never accounted for.
>>
>>64361872
>AFFC and ADWD have the 2 best character arcs in the entire series.

Yes, but as a whole they were lousy additions to the series. Not really because they didn't have interesting characters, locations, or plots, but because they did nothing to advance the goddamn storyline.

After A Storm of Swords we were eager to see the story continue. To see old plot threads start to resolve.

Instead those two novels needlessly expanded the story without resolving any of the old plot-threads.

A lot of that shit should have been cut entirely. What was left could have been put into one novel and it could have ended farther ahead than it has.
>>
>>64360600
he married a jew, i'm not sure if they had children though
>>
>>64356314

GRRM's ending is bound to be better. Every bit of D&D OC has been pretty shit from day 1, starting with Ros' large role, to Talisa not being Jeyne, to 20 good men, to Stannis' character being butchered.
>>
>>64362496
Don't forget he's added tons of shit into a five year span that was never meant to be written anyway, leaving him juggling loads of plot threads that he's probably already bored or frustrated with.
Is the seventh book meant to be where the gap would have ended?

some characters storylines are finally at the point they would've been after the 5 year gap. Dany's chapter where she takes off from the pit was supposed to be her first after the gap. Same thing with Arya's sample chapter from TWOW.
>>
>>64362440
He needs his old editor back.

>Aegon invading Westeros
This was a twist that wasn't ever necessary. Should have been left on the cutting room floor.

>JonCon and his greyscale
Cut.

>Doran's plotting in Dorne
Cut.

>Darkstar on the run
STUPID! Cut.

>Arianne traveling
All Dorne stuff should have been cut.

>Arya with the faceless men
Cut. We don't need to see it. Her training can be inferred and summarized when she reconnects to the main plot.

>Sam and Gilly in Oldtown
I love the bits with Aemon, but we could keep that and have him just stay at the wall. Rest can be cut.

>The Maester plots
Who the fuck cares? Cut. The story was big and complex enough already. Too many decorations on the Christmas tree now.

>Jaime and Brienne in the Riverlands
Brienne didn't need to be a POV. Take some of the elements from her storyline and give them to Jaime instead.

>Auranne Waters and the missing fleet
Who cares? Pointless little development anyway. Story needs more focus.

>The Corsair King/Shrouded Lord
I don't even remember this.

>The Faceless Men's dragon plot
What? Don't remember this. Cut it.

>The Sandsnakes infiltrating places
NO DORNE.

There. Now the only things left are things that the story already justified. Now it can all be fit into one novel called A Feast For Crows.

Gurm just published a new blog:

I did a lot of travelling last year. Probably too much. You don't have to chide me about that. I know, believe me, I know. I am trying to cut down on travel this year and in subsequent years, at least until Ice & Fire is done.

But it's a struggle. I love travel -- not the flying, but being there, seeing other parts of the world, meeting my readers. As a kid, I never went anywhere at all except in my imagination, so now, when I have the means, travel is hard to resist. It's a big wonderful world.

Also, I am not getting any younger (some of you love to remind me of that). Travel is fun, but it can also be taxing. I am all too aware that if I don't take some of these trips now, age and health may preclude my ever taking them. Who knows what awaits me (or you, or you, or you) five years or ten years down the road?

Some of the travel I did in 2015 was for business, or to attend conventions that I had committed to two, three, four, even five years ago. Other travel was more spontaneous. A nephew's wedding. An invitation to the SuperBowl. The last Grateful Dead concerts. People keep making me offers I cannot refuse... and not just Don Corleone...

Anyway... I travelled, and mostly I am glad I did... I wrote a couple of pages about my various trips and conventions in the Lost Post, and included plenty of pictures. I am not going to bother redoing any of that. I fear that only a few of you are interested in my travels. Many would rather I never ever got up from my computer.

So no rehash of the rehash.

I will say that I had a great time in San Francisco at the GAME OF THRONES premiere parties, that ConQuest in KC was something special, and that my summer trip to Germany, Sweden, and Finland was one I will long remember and cherish. Stockholm is a gorgeous city that I want to see again, and I had a fantastic time in Hamburg hanging with the beautiful and talented Sibel Kekilli, her guy Andreas, and my old agent and friend Werner Fuchs.

I don't know he's just an old man. Let him enjoy some things. He always gets us the books eventually

I don't really care to be honest. Lost interest in the series. You don't get attached to characters when you know they are probably going to die rather soon. Still don't understand why so many people got behind Oberyn. But yeah, it just isn't impactful now when it is clear they are going for a Dany and/or Jon Snow wins and no other characters really matter ending. After Robb dies, you get a sense of not knowing what is going to happen because he never gets revenge for his dad like how a typical story would unfold. But then a bunch of people die and no one really matters.

A lot of the stuff that I think should be cut could always be saved and used instead for an entirely new series set in the same universe. On its own I think it is all good and interesting... but there was just no need for it so I'm too frustrated to give a fuck.

GRRM could write a separate series someday (yeah right) where a lot of these plot ideas are tweaked and implemented.
>>

>>
>>64363216
Gurm has explicitly said that the character who will win in the end won't be the obvious one. Dany is by far the most obvious victor, but also one who has a lot of foreshadowing saying that she won't win (her mind has never really been on ruling anything).

Jon is a strong possibility, but I still have faith that he is going to turn out to be Azor Ahai and tPwwP, yet not get the Iron Throne because "prophecy is like a treacherous woman".

I wouldn't rule it out. Books yes, there is no chance he lets anyone write in his universe but TV is a different medium and farther away from the canon so I think its possible he could be persuaded. Plus now he's got a good relationship with HBO which he probably didn't have whenever he said that. Plus GoT is such a huge success that he would get a shitload of $ for it. More than he got for GoT.
