So many things in Trek are like this and it drives me insane

>You can just create supergenius lifeforms in the holodeck according to any psychological parameters?? Cool let's ignore it tho

Transporters + holodecks are basically infinitely worldbreaking

They have proved you can create infinite armies of supersoldiers with transporters, just create billions of fully functional human beings. This has INFINITE applications. Are you telling me there aren't some crazy fucks out there who are kidnapping people and then transporter cloning them and making them watch as they torture the clones? It's a big galaxy. Just the mere possibility of anything remotely that fucked happening instantly makes the setting weird.

Are you telling me people aren't making sentient rape victims in holodecks?

Why is no one even bothered by the prospect of sentience????? WHY THE FUCK WAS DATA THE FIRST TIME ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT? WE'R EALREADY THINKING ABOUT THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSCIOUSNESS OR VOLITION NOW, AND THERE'S SOME ASSHOLE 400 YEARS FROM NOW WHO WANTS TO DISMANTLE DATA WITH A SMILE?

For all the praise the shows get for having technical advisers I wish they had hired like one fucking philosophy person
>>
>>64353650
um. you cant transporter clone, just transfer through the transporter. soldiers created in the holodeck cant leave the holodeck. things created in the replicator are simple, and complex things take time. things as complex as sentient soldiers could not be created using replicators. sorry bub you lose.

Remember that one time Voyager proved the Klingon religion is correct, at least in regards to the afterlife?
Remember that one time DS9 proved that humanoids have souls/ghosts (ie, "mental patterns" that aren't just chemical reactions in the brain, and which are stored completely separately from the physical body info in the transporter)?
Remember that one time TNG proved that the transporter is actually transporting matter through space somehow (instead of converting matter to energy and transferring that energy), and that critters can live in that same space?
>>
>>64354618
that was a planetary anomaly, you pleb. it was never implied it was anything more than a one time fluke. quit making shit up that doesnt exist in my trek.
>>
>>64354638
>>64353650
Does anyone else just retcon constantly as they watch the show?

The whole time I'm watching I'm going
>Yeah uh that never happened because it'd ruin the setting
>Okay, that happened, but it was slightly different in some way so that it doesn't ruin the setting
>Wow, that entire episode didn't happen at all because that ruins everything

Personally I retcon ALL time travel out of existence, as well as parallel universes. Reasons for both summed up by Plinkett Equation and Plinkett's griping about the Worf dimension hopping episode.
>>
>>64353650
The problem was that replicators and transporters were added for plot convenience in TOS but had all sorts of insane implications that weren't considered. TNG developed them but never took them to their full potential.
VOY really went all the way with things, as by that time the computer's ability to create independent consciousnesses seemed to be well known.
A bit strange the computer was that powerful but wasn't a 'smart' AI itself
>>64354138
Hello person who hasn't actually watched Trek
>>
I just watched this. It was so funny. I love when Riker was making shit up about controlling the ship and the Ferengi was acting like he understood so as not to appear stupid. Ha ha....dumb Ferengis!
>>
>>64354638
the transporter is a god damn miracle machine.

using it they have found a way to clone people, produce immortality, and even theoretically explored the idea of creating real objects from holographic objects by tansporting them with some scifi bullshit thereby basically allowing humans to create anything they could possibly conceive.

but then they never really went through with it because they wanted to fuck over Moriarty or something and then never discussed or explored the possibility of actually doing it like it was a boring idea not worth thinking about

The only thing I really find annoying about Harry Kim is the slight Chinese accent the actor who plays him slips in and out of when he pronounce certain words.
He sounds like an old school all American radio voice personality one minute and the next you hear him struggling to pronounce certain words.

For example instead of saying "Little" he will pronounce it as "Littol".
Instead of saying "Killed" he will say "Kiolled".
Hes constantly throwing O's into words that don't need them.

Is there a good episode guide that recommends which episodes to which in each season? I really like the couple of seasons I've watched of TNG but I don't have the heart to watch every episode from here on out but I'd love to hit the highlights.

I skipped season 1, watched maybe half of 2, all of 3, most of 4, and a little in 5.

I don't understand why people don't just check it out on their own, if you like TOS, you'll enjoy it. Almost all the original crew returns with the original voice actors.

It has stories with other characters from TOS as well: Commander For, Harry Mudd, The Tribbles, The Guardian. It was widely regarded by a lot of older Trekkie's as the fourth season, or fourth year of their voyage (source: my mom) but isn't really considered canon by many anymore.

The closest acknowledgement we got of it in live action Trek was the life support belts making an appearance in TMP.

It's been official canon for a while now. Roddenberry hated it after he made TMP, probably because it didn't fit in his Vision (like, they had money and stuff in the cartoon). So during the 80's TAS was non-canon, but after Gene lost control of Trek everybody stopped paying attention to that crap, and eventually Viacom decided it was official when they wanted to sell the DVD's.
