Snowtown (actually grew up around the area during these murders)
The Loved Ones

Holy Smokes

all i can think of atm
Only good one I can think off the top of my head
>>64341247
Add Picnic at hanging rock and the last wave to your list too.
>>64341237
>implying that that there's no cultural significance to the weekend
Working for scraps at Bunnings selling barbecue gear and home improvement gear to everyone else while stuck smelling delicious sausages on a Sunday sounds like a pretty stiff deal

>>64341298
Don't worry about them. Turnbull will take em away by the time you're old enough to read a newspaper.

Are there any Australian (or just in general) films similar to Wake in Fright? The whole craziness of the outback, madness vibes?
Or any other good films set in the australian outback, regardless of era? Specifically looking for something like the aforementioned Wake in Fright or The Proposition.
Australian cinema is seemingly like 95% trash with some of these incredible gems popping up every once in a while.
>>64341341
Nah dude, I'm just gainfully employed.

>>64341355
good question, i actually really enjoyed wake in fright, and its one of my all time favourite aussie movies
I tried Sunday too far away but that was a miss. Try Walkabout with Jenny Agutter, i think it has some pretty horrifying themes, a desert setting and Jenny Agutter of course
Snowtown nails the psychological problems in average Australians that many would miss, but its not set in the outback.
Roadgames was a american produced car chase thriller set in Australia. Not the best, but it has Jamie Lee Curtis which makes for an interesting watch
Holy Smokes has some crazy vibes, but isn't executed well, Harlequinn does the same thing
The Rover is an Aussie post-apocalyptic film set in the outback but is more of an action movie than a thriller
I dunno Wake In Fright is a rare beast, not sure if we'll see another great movie like that again
Saw this a few nights ago with the wife, it had a nice australian black sense of humour about it
Based Boar war movie
A bit grim and depressing but I liked this.
Does anyone think this was a good movie? I watched it but didn't really get it
This was really funny, but got too sentimental towards the end
Anyone remember the 80's miniseries that was literally the same basic story as Legends of the Fall?
>>64341511
Harlequinn
Based Wincer
That zombie movie with the aliens was pretty good.
>>64339784
Animal fucking Kingdom. The aus fucks have my respect for that film alone.

Is the movie with Noni from Play School?
I have seen another movie with Noni where she plays a derro single mum, it has Doctor Carl from Neighbors in it too and he molests the fuck out of Noni's cunny daughter. I forget the name of the movie though.
I just started downloading this. Giving it a watch for based Hugo Weaving.

Snowtown was probably the most uncomfortable film I've ever seen.
I remember when this came out and I gave it a watch just because it was the only film set in Perth and I am from Perth originally. It was actually pretty good.
>>64341631
The Interview (1998) is great movie for Hugo.
The Cars That Ate Paris
The Survivor
The Last Wave
Patrick
The Night, The Prowler
>>64341622
Yeah thats the one. Bryan Brown and Rebecca Smart as well.

>>64342045
Just went and looked up the cast for the full run of Heartbreak High. Some interesting names in there. Totally forgot The Mentalist was on there for 8 eps. Good to see Drasic showing up as a 'that guy' in hollywood action movies now.
>>64342158
Seriously? I've heard about Japanese actors like Ken Watanabe being outcasts in their own country. Did this effect him the same way? I would think not. Or are you saying it effected him playing an Aus in America?
>>64342158
Remember his brother's science-fiction/time travel show?
>>64342221
Different anon here. It gave his name and by association the film, more prestige when appearing in Aussie films.

It was ok actually. He played a test pilot/astronaut/whatever who was recruited for a secret program involving a time machine that could only go back exactly seven days, to stop terrorists and stuff.
>>64342292
Yeah. I remember when he did things like Looking For Alibrandi and such, it was like ''our boy tony comes home to star in this movie before jetting off back to hollywood''.
>>64342378
It's a fine film with some terrific performances but villainous history. Australians are big on blaming foreigners for their own mistakes.
>>64342391
Is a "national treasure" worth being? Seriously though, I saw that "one night" special of his last year and thought it was absolutely fascinating.

now that I look at this list, many of these films really know how to capture a wry, sardonic, bruised form of humour. a brand of humour forged from damage and hardship.

I can't work out why all our films are depressingly existential, is it tapping into our honest banter bone or purely cost related?
>>64344057
A little of both.
Is it just me are nearly all Aussie films so overly Australian? Like they need to let the world know it's an Australian film? It can't just be a good film based on it's own merits and story? It has to be plastered with shit-tier Australian actors, with shitty abbos and shit over the top accents in the fucking outback?
It's always shit and kills the movie.
Like am I the only one who notices this?
>>64344057
Both, in a weird way. High budget Aussie movies are often quite bland.
