S1 is bad because of poor acting and one actor going through a paranoid schitzo meltdown and S5 is bad because the arc from S2-S4 was supposed to extend into S5 but they weren't sure they were getting a S5. So they crammed a resolution into S4 and then had to scramble for a plot to S5.
If you can make it through the first half of S1 it's pretty damn good. Just be prepared to give a GIANT pass to the CGI, for the time it was pretty amazing for syndicated tv...nowadays...not so much.

Also probably, pretty much every episode expands the plot, and turns questions into more questions. It's basically a political drama in space.
