One thing I really hated about this movie: they got John Boyega to play Finn, but wrote the role like they got Kevin Hart.
Boyega proved in Attack the Block that he can play serious, dramatic roles. Finn is supposed to be a former stormtrooper who has been traumatized on his first combat drop and is now leaving an entire life of military conditioning and indoctrination. Traces of it should still be on him. He should speak and carry himself like he is still a soldier, and he should exhibit some sort of angst over the fact that he is literally gunning down people who could easily have been him, people he has been trained to see as friends and comrades.
But as soon as he hops in the TIE Fighter, he's SASSY BLACK SIDEKICK, and that's all he is for the whole rest of the movie. It's a complete waste of the talent, a complete waste of the character concept, and a classic movie stereotype that serves no real purpose.
And to then complete the joke, he's a janitor, because of course he's a fucking janitor, because he's not funny enough without giving him a shitty job.

The worst thing? At age 15 I decided I wanted to be a comics artist. Around the academic shit my parents made me study (they wouldn't ever let me take formal art classes), I taught myself to draw. I still spend all my spare time with art, I've gotten reasonably good at it and plan to go even further next year.
However, the thing I wanted to get into to try and tell stories like Metabarons, Akira, Kraven's Last Hunt, Dark Knight Returns, etc? It's dead. And like flies the SJWs have infested the corpse. The only thing keeping the sales figures up is literally hundreds of variant covers for monthly issues, digital downloads and including comics bundled in Lootcrate in the circulation figures. Comic artists - mostly straight white men who have slaved for years to get good enough at drawing to make it in the business - are paid so little at this point that working for Marvel or DC, doing two monthly titles at 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, it doesn't even equal a living wage. Unless you're that girl from Tumblr who can't fucking draw on Squirrel Girl, she's picking up a good cheque.
The most obvious crossover with comic skills is to go into the games industry as a concept artist - except again, that's being taken over systematically by these crazies too. Just like jobbing comic artists, most game dev staff are terrified of accidentally pissing them off because it's usually more than their jobs are worth.

Comics may traditionally have always been a low-paying field with little security and a low level of cultural capital, but they never had this veneer of social justice identity politics thrust into them before. They may have been a traditionally liberal medium, but nothing like the repressive, stifling atmosphere of political correctness that's taken hold nowadays.
Talk to other artists behind closed doors and they'll tell you the same thing. this bothered the shit out of me. boyega was great in the movie despite what i thought he was gonna be. the problem was that his character did not have the gravity. i blame the tone of the movie as well. this guy was abducted and brainwashed, and probably suffering from PTSD and serious identity issues. but all those scars are just not there.
the whole movie lacked gravity. it was a big puffy joke with no substance.
