An autobiographical meditation on vice vs. virtue, carnal pleasures vs spiritual love, money vs poetry, from a deeply Christian philosophy erudite from Texas, who has struggled with finding his place in the Jewified degenerate capital and is still crying everyday about his suicidial mariachi brother and harsh father. Experimental editing to evoke fragments of memories, intimate thoughts as prayers or confessions to evoke universal feelings, interweaving the micro and the macro. Just like tree of life opened with a story about nature vs grace, the pearl parable is about this constant struggle and quest to be a better man in this meaningless world; the pearl is the light (thin red line), the grace (tol), the wonder (to the wonder)
Terry admits in this flick that he's too fascinated with beauty, as he views it as the closest thing we wingless beasts have to reaching heaven; even though beauty is really the devil's temptation to make us shallow. He's a sinner and a hypocrite and he knows it. Bums and cripples are ugly and he knows they don't really belong alongside his perfume ads aesthetics. He knows Hollywood is Jewish hell but he still stays there and accepts their money because he loves shooting pretty Jewish actresses and their feetsies. He knows it's a real struggle.

>tfw you want to follow the way of Grace but Nature keeps pulling you back down
>tfw you want to be brought back to the Wonder but the Wonder is forever fleeting
>tfw the only way to be happy is to love, but love brings more pain than happiness
>tfw you'll never find the pearl
>tfw you wanna be like the monk but are closer to the pimp
>tfw you're a dog chasing a tennis ball in a swimming pool

He was more of a stud than you'd think. It's not hard to imagine that a successful filmmaker may have known at least dozens of girls from various walks of life, which may include strippers and whores. I really appreciated how raw and sexual it was, for me it's what makes the film interesting in his oeuvre, It was very honest of Terry to reveal the half devil inside of him. Of course, a serious disciple of Terry must remember the autobiographical panties stealing scene in TOL.

It kind of takes the fun out of discovering it yourself, but at one point he samples what is arguably the finest scene of Twin Peaks. I watched the show for the first time this year, and it was the scene that probably affected me the most out of the whole show and stayed with me. I just took it as a "welcome to L.A." moment, like the earthquake intro or even the robbery scene; Terry's first adult experience (and therefore exposure to crime, etc.adult age is the loss of innocence/when people turn to greed, lust... in terry's flicks) in the big city after growing up in a small texas town (tree of life)

Also, I got the feeling that often, Rick witnesses things, meet various people with different life experiences... not randomly but as a way of finding creative inspiration or better understanding (understonda (“to understand, experience, learn”)), because it's part of his job as a writer or part of his curious nature: a witness who must research the real world so he can then reproduce it.

what is it about malickfags that makes them so pompous and pretentious?
>>
>>64321964
Major Briggs [to his son Bobby]: A vision I had in my sleep last night — as distinguished from a dream which is mere sorting and cataloguing of the day's events by the subconscious. This was a vision, fresh and clear as a mountain stream — the mind revealing itself to itself. In my vision, I was on the veranda of a vast estate, a palazzo of some fantastic proportion. There seemed to emanate from it a light from within — this gleaming radiant marble. I had known this place. I had in fact been born and raised there. This was my first return, a reunion with the deepest wellsprings of my being. Wandering about, I was happy that the house had been immaculately maintained. There had been added a number of additional rooms, but in a way it blended so seamlessly with the original construction, one would never detect any difference. Returning to the house's grand foyer, there came a knock at the door. My son was standing there. He was happy and care-free, clearly living a life of deep harmony and joy. We embraced — a warm and loving embrace, nothing withheld. We were in this moment one. My vision ended. I awoke with a tremendous of optimism and confidence in you and your future. That was my vision; it was of you. I'm so glad to have had this opportunity to share it with you. I wish you nothing but the very best, always.

Is that it? What's the quote in KoC?

Yeah, it could just be another example of Rick being the outside observer. I definitely agree with the notion that he was finding inspiration from those around him, but I don't think he was taking it from the cold television screens. I thought the car chases were another reminder of our inescapable cultural bankruptcy, and the OJ incident being a touchstone of that. The light was only found in the eyes of other people.

Roads are a constant motif throughout the film, which is at its core a tale about going from the a place of decadent materialism (darkness) to a higher, more meaningful and spiritual place (light). The film ends with shots of an unending highway. A modern pilgrim's progress.
