Overrated movie. The scene where Walken blows his brains out is unintentionally comical.

I also hated The Force Awakens btw, so don't even try calling me a pleb.
>>
>>64300389
Fair opinion
I have plenty of my own qualms with the film but still consider it to be a classic
Fuck The Force Awakens
>>
Grew up in a small northern town and my grandparents all worked in the mines.

This movie hit me right in the feels.
>>
>>64300343
Amazing movie, a little trouble with the pacing but besides that i love every minute of it.
The scene where they play russian roulete in Vietnam the first time is not only iconic but also one of the best scene of all cinema
>>
>>64300663
Yeah this. I love this movie mostly because everything before Vietnam is pitch perfect. When they get back isn't bad either. And Meryl is amazing in this, I can't take my eyes off her.

ye, the first act is GOAT

women will never understand this scene

did you know that axel (the big guy) was an actual steel worker that was just asked to be in the movie when they were scouting locations.

>mfw people prefer the Vietnam scenes

I get it, but the hometown scenes are so much more meaningful to me. My family grew up in a western PA town adjacent to Pittsburgh and it was so accurate.

I honestly thought the opening with the wedding was a little too long for my liking. They could've easily cut that shit in half

>The scene where Walken blows his brains out is unintentionally comical.
I actually giggled at how rushed his character's last line was before he died

Also Cazale was on the last stages of cancer while filming.

I still can't stand this movie
Seemed like a giant waste of money to me
I prefer the documentary over the movie itself
What am I missing?

>They could've easily cut that shit in half

Yeah but that's kind of the magic of it, that your privy to all these sidelong glances and romantic innuendos and it builds for you the backstory of all these characters and their history together without having to say much at all. You don't see that very often, maybe in Cassavetes' best work, but other than that, it's pretty rare.
>>
>>64303930
Dare I say the movie is comfy?
>>
>>64303950
u cant say that
>>
>>64303742
I'd say it's a mixture of things. The feral nature, the veneer of civilisation being removed, that kind of purgatory just seems familiar. I like everything about how it's shot too, and the music, it just seems perfect to me, I can go back and watch it as much as I want and it still cuts me. Everybody's there, there's nothing left out, it's whole, there's nothing I can think I'd like to change about it.
>>
>>64303950
If one of the definitions of comfy means I can go get drunk at that wedding right now and then wake up the next day with the lady I came home with and eat a shit ton of leftovers to soak up the alcohol and then the day after that go in to open the butcher shop that I've owned and loved for the last 14 years and will until the day I die, then yeah. It's comfy as hell.

People who like the deer hunter, if you watch it again do you sit through that whole wedding scene?
>>
>>64304445
it's not really just sentimentality tho

They're singing to feel better, not because they love America. They're still pissed off that the war took away one of their closest friends. You can see the pain on Streep's face, not just from the loss of Nick, but from the fact that this song is making her feel better even though she has mixed feelings about the country at that point. It's meant to be a mix of irony and sentimentalism.

on my 2nd viewing I actually preferred the domestic scenes to the Vietnam stuff
>>
>>64300343
As someone who can, in no way, relate to beer-swilling ignoramuses, the opening to this movie was unbearable.
>>
>>64304528
For sure. I like the first and third act better than the jungle scenes actually. You need the war to make it a war movie, but it's really about what it did to their hometown and the people there. That's what helps to make that ending so good, it's also a metaphor for the whole country. A bit on the nose but solid nonetheless.
>>
>>64304541
>They're singing to feel better, not because they love America

nah

they're singing to try to get more Oscars
>>
>>64304629
the target audience of a film like The Deer Hunter is middle-class pseudointellectuals like Cimono. you're meant to be all like "oh yes this is how the working class live how endearing".
>>
>>64300343
Am I the only one who loves the wedding scene
>>
>>64303410
Without context the POW scenes wouldn't have anywhere near the same impact. These are real people with ordinary lives and we spend a lot if time getting to know that and their loved ones.
>>
>>64304463
underrated. love this movie
