>Star Wars had come out … and everyone thought I was a horrible actress. I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me. Mike wrote a letter to Anthony Minghella and said, ‘Put her in Cold Mountain, I vouch for her.’ And then Anthony passed me on to Tom Tykwer, who passed me on to the Wachowskis."
>>
>>64264815

this isn't new, it was known 30 years ago when Hamil disappeared, carrie disappeared and only person made anything out of it was guy that hated it.

It ate rest of Guinness's career. He had some fantastic pre-starwars movies

when your main lead ends up in Guyver 2, you know your universe can ruin anyone
>>
>>64264815

>And then Anthony passed me on to Tom Tykwer, who passed me on to the Wachowskis.

What did she mean by this?

natalie portman isn't a great actress senpai
>>
>>64264898
Hamill did well in voice acting. He's never been in the poor house. Poor example.
>>
>>64264898

Fortunately for Mark Hamill, it led him to some memorable roles which grew his personal fanbase. His roles as Christopher Blair in Wing Commander and the Joker in Batman are still remembered fondly.
>>
>>64264815
I agree, nobody has a career in film thanks to star wars
>Leia - cast in films as a novelty cameo
>Luke - lol
>Ford - already had a career
>McGregor - already had a career
>Portman - already had a career

The only ones destined for a proper career from the new one are Gleeson and Isaac, and thats because they already have careers

voice acting is to acting as standing on the street corner panhandling is to working. it's what you do to make ends meet when all other options are closed
>>
>>64265029
Pretty much. He was just bitter over how people ignored everything else he did and focused on Star Wars.
>>
Hamil had a healthy career. If we're being honest - the car accident hurt his career more than SW.

Carrie Fisher ruined her own career with drugs.

Natalie Portman ultimately bounced back and won an Oscar.

Harrison Ford was always good. Same goes for James Earl Jones.

The Star Wars ruins careers meme needs to die.

Where will Daisy, John and Oscar be 10 years from now?
>>
>>64265157

This. And it's a shame, I mean I'm sure Hamil doesn't mind too much considering his role as the Joker is forever cemented. But he was a gorgeous looking man before the accident.
>>
>>64265291
Oscar will be winning Oscars
Daisy will be visiting St Jude's after she is killed off on 8
John will be dead in a gutter somewhere in the UK
>>

I still love Herschlag tbqh family

Daisy will basically become the Meg Ryan of dating movies for two decades.

John will do comedy and family movies, and on occasion an Oscar nominated movie depicting him as a serious actor in the roles of rappers and CEOs and shit.

Oscar Isaac will be an action star in another Marvel movie line eventually.
>>
>>64265291
Only Oscar will have a successful career.
>>
>>64265291
It doesn't matter. This trilogy will make sure they never have to work again. Daisy can go back to London and to theater, John can do shitty b horror movies and Oscar will go back to doing low budget films.

>Carrie Fisher ruined her own career with drugs.
A part of that was her trying to self medicate due to being bipolar, which eventually lead her from being in the spotlight, but even so she's actually had a prominent career as the script doctor most studios turn to if they feel the script they have is lacking. It's just that she usually goes uncredited for her services due to some Screen Writers Guild clause or other meant to protect the original writers.

Hamill's a happy little nerd doing what he enjoys and making decent money off it, I don't see why you feel the need to shit on that. Frankly, I'd be thrilled to be forever remembered in such an iconic role. And at the end of the day, Ford's only going to be remembered primarily for playing Indy and Han Solo and ruining Bladerunner despite being in so many movies, anyway.
>>

from a certain point of view
>>
>>64265549
No way. He is a great voice actor. Sure, if he didn't fuck his face up he could have done more in film but it doesn't take away how talented he was in cartoons. I know people on /tv/ don't consider that a true talent but he got to do something he loves and it payed the bills.
>>
I met Mark hamil when I was a kid at my local comic book store...the line was out the door. He really seemed like the nicest guy on the planet

I'm just saying he wasn't a failure like most people on /tv/ thought he was. He made a decent career out of voice acting. Good for him now because he's going to make tons of money off these new films.

Well, maybe you should have tried ACTING, Natalie. Portman is so awful. She completely phones in any performance in a movie she doesn't like. No wonder they're writing her out of Thor. I don't like those movies either, but if you're getting paid millions to do them you should try to be more professional.

I admit Hamill and Fisher didn't do much afterwards, aside from Hamill and his voice acting. Fisher, however, rode the cocaine train right the fuck out of town.

Voice acting is to live action acting as part time work is to full time. They pay you very little because VO work for a movie can be completed in one session.

Case in point, Robin Williams was only paid $35,000 for his role as the Genie in Aladdin with pretty much nothing in residuals. If a big name like Williams gets fucked over that bad on a Disney feature as a leading voice, you can imagine what lesser voice actors have to deal with.

That's why you'll see so many familiar voice actors in just about every cartoon on television. If they don't keep working, they'll have nothing.
>>
>I've never heard of any of these people outside of Star Wars. I don't watch movies other than Star Wars, so I refuse to believe they had other jobs, and all those movies suck
>Voice acting is to acting as eating whore's shit out of a gutter is to being born into the Rothschild family

OK, so she flashed an insincere smile, does that make her undesirable? of course not

You orbiters are going to be so badly adjusted to real life when you actually start engaging and spending time with women

They are not these aesthetically perfect humanoid creatures that require zero attention or maintainance, they're like you. They're like me

If big ears, or a goofy smile, etc are your biggest problems boy boy are you going to come up empty handed. Things when it comes to women that are actually relevant would be: is she fat, does she try to take care of her body, is she a total bitch, etc, not whether she has a mole on her neck or not
>>
Top voice actors make fuckloads.

Pay per job is lower - so someone working one movie a year is poor. However, the actors don't need to travel to set, get fitted for costumes, work around other actors. You can do a different job every day and never have to travel, as long as you live near a studio.

So someone like Hamill, who does multiple DC animations + video games + the occasional cartoon, is rolling in about as much as an A-list movie star.

Much easier work, too.
>>
>>64272379
So? six million is still a decent amount for someone who doesn't care about living a ridiculously lavish lifestyle.

Harrison Ford's career wasn't ruined, if anything George Lucas gave him an acting career. Unfortunately, he ended up being Lucas's go to guy. Ewan McGregor's wasn't ruined either since he was already an actor. Unfortunately for Hayden Christensen, people will always remember Anakin and make fun of him for it. Samuel L. Jackson on the other hand? He was in Pulp Fiction as Jules Winnfield which just about any moviefag will always remember and never forget. Not only that but most people now a days probably recognize him more for his role as Nick Fury than anything. Lucky for Windu the Dindu I suppose.

Portman was great for a child actress, but she is mediocre as fuck as an adult actress. It probably doesn't help that she thinks acting is below her superior intellect. She said exactly that prior to going to Harvard to become a psychologist. Of course she quickly realized that getting paid millions to play dress up is a lot better than getting paid $30k/year listening to some retard Drone about his mental problems. She went back to acting but she still didn't care enough to improve her craft. The Black Swan performance was basically a talented director managing to coax a decent performance out of a run of the mill talent, then edit it to look more than what it was

Hamil looked good until the late 80s, so I honestly don't think that's what killed his on-screen career.

He's so cemented in pop culture as "Luke Skywalker" in ways that didn't happen with the other cast, I think that's what did it more than anything else. If I were shooting a film, I wouldn't want my main character to literally be Luke Skywalker. I don't think the audience would've been able to get past it - that's why voice acting suited him well. It allowed him to escape the persona Star Wars created for him.

mate, i think you're conflating getting a degree in Psychology with working as a Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist. i have a minor in Psychology and never contemplated working as either, and neither do a majority of Psychology majors.

as for her acting chops, she can deliver when paired with talented directors, but is really underwhelming when working with mediocre talent. i can see her winning another academy award given a meaty role.

She specifically said that acting was beneath her and she intended to pursue something more worthy of her intellect.

Most psychology majors end up doing something else, but not by choice. The world simply doesn't need so many of them. Although she would have gotten a job as one if she wanted to - for the same reason she was accepted to Harvard. Being a famous actress opens a lot of doors that would otherwise stay closed.

Dude, you need a graduate level degree and need to pass a licensing exam to be a therapist. And if you only have a master's degree, you always need to be supervised by someone with a doctoral-level degree. A bachelor's degree in psychology does not allow you to do that.

"Griff" from The Big Red One is one of the most memorable characters, and the film was the grittiest look at Normandy and the Africa-Italy-European campaign of WWII prior to Private Ryan.

Pic related. Griff runs down a Nazi hiding in one of the ovens, and shoots him over and over, turning progressively insane while doing so, before the Sergeant steps in, glances into the oven, and suggests "I think you got him." One of dozen memorable moments from that film.

The bangalore torpedo scene where the sarge shoots at him. Lots of others.

The real question is why he didn't fire his agent for shit decision like Corvette Summer, or Lights Out in Georgia.

People have argued whether or not he got facial surgery for a long time but I think it's just his broken node making his whole face look off
>>
>>64278561
His nose got flattened into his face. they reconstructed it with cartilage from his ear. His cheeks are sunken in after, because one of the cheek bones was broken and had to be fixed with surgery that left scars madeup in the pictures. The skin over his cheeks doesn't "fit" right after.
>>
>>64273606

I think he looks cooler after the accident.

He was too pretty for me to take seriously (bad acting in Ep4 didn't help either). I like the more rugged Jedi look. I think his appearance change fits Luke's arc from innocent farm boy to Jedi.

If his maternal grandparents were Jewish then his mother was 100% Jew and if his mother was Jewish then he's Jewish by the Jew's own matrilineal laws.

You know nothing. Let me give you an example of the power of voice acting.

There is this video game series called Metal Gear Solid. The main character has an iconic scratchy voice. Might not be the best, but people know it.

Due to being a part of the Voice Actors Union, his pay requirement for reprising his role in the series was actually higher than Kiefer fucking Sutherland. So they hired Sutherland, whom critics said fell flat in his delivery of the lines.

He was actually cheaper than David Hayter.

The most prolific actress according to Guiness Book of World Records is Jennifer Hale, a voice actress [damn good too, was Bastila Shan in KOTOR and pulled off a British accent despite being born in Canada and raised in Alabama].

She is worth millions. So is the guy who does all the "wahooooo" stuff for Mario in Super Mario Bros.

You can't discount voice acting in its relevance, prevalence, and expense.
>>
>>64270971

>>
>>64272420
>Easier work

I remember hearing one of the Doctors from Doctor Who talk about how much easier the Big Finish audio plays were to pull off than acting in front of a camera.

Not to mention they can have an actor reprise his role in the same time period without appearing older.

Voice acting is also neat in that if you are a big deal voice actor [and weren't a live actor beforehand], most people cannot recognize yo, so you can go about your business in public and in peace.

>>
>>64267847

He was a manlet with a cute face and no particular charisma.

Emma Watson is Belle in the live action Beauty and the Beast.

Facebook has been going crazy over it. I think after this movie she will not be typecasted.

Daniel Radcliffe was no longer typecasted for me after watching A Young Doctor's Journal.

Carrie Fischer never overcame her typecasting. It takes a bit of effort to get around it.
