You don't get my point. Most jurors don't see reasonable doubt unless there's another possible suspect. The judge said they can't point out any other possible suspects. Hence, the trial was doomed to be lost from the beginning. Even the lawyers knew this. The judge probably knew it too.
It's not a flaw in the legal system. It's a flaw in modern human mindset. There was more than enough reasonable doubt presented at the trial. If Steven and Brendan ever hope to be released there has to be a new suspect, which is what a lot of people are trying to find.
