There was absolutely no reason to eliminate the GoT Generals and the ban came completely out of the blue.
Nobody was forced to participate in GoT Generals and all GoT discussion was restricted to one thread and thus didn't intrude on anybody else's discussions.

I’d suggest that the tv series ruined /got/. Early on, we could speculate on where the story would go and how it would be adapted but with each season, it became more and more clear that D&D were hacks and this was reflected in the threads.
Either way, the ban on GoT Generals is stupid, arbitrary and makes no sense for /tv/, which is all about discussing tv shows after all.

The casting is good for the most part, the effects are backed by HBO money, and the cinematography is impressive. The problem is the writing. The source material is a widely appealing fantasy adventure written by a former television writer, and most of it translates very easily to the screen. Whenever the show deviates from the source material, the quality declines sharply. You get the typical "reeee they changed things" reaction from fans of the books, and then on top of that, very little if any of the new material is quality material-- see season 5 Dorne, Roz the prostitute, whatever the hell happened in Qarth. People who aren't familiar with the source material-- likely the majority of the audience-- just take the average of all of it and still end up with a good show. We'll see how long that continues. People who read the books can pick out the tv-specific elements and can recognize that they correlate strongly with the shittier parts of the show.
In other words, the show can still be pretty good even if D&D are shitty most of the time.

That just boils down to "it's too complicated" and the modern TV audience is much more willing to follow some complex serial series than they were in the 90s when he wrote it. The structure of the story lends itself very easily to television episodes and even seasons. Most chapters end in cliffhangers and other high notes that feel very television-like. You'll notice the adaptation is closer to the source material than almost any other book to television transition, and it's stupidly successful.

Jon is "dead" in much the same way, but he'll be coming back to life in both media. Jon got a letter from Ramsay that said Stannis is dead, but no one believes it. The stannis plotline is pretty different, and the Dorne plotline (actually from Feast) is entirely different. Sansa had nothing to do and was given a side plot that a tertiary character had in the book. Bits and pieces were cut from the Essos part of the story.

Brienne has a much less prominent role in the book. She has a meandering plotline in Feast that never brings her into contact with the Stark girls and eventually has her kidnapped by undead Catelyn Stark and forced to lure Jamie into a trap. It was weird.
Stannis is much better prepared in the book and didn't burn Shireen. He has a loyal army plus some northmen outside winterfell where we last see him. There are northmen inside the castle willing to betray the Boltons if they get the opportunity as well.
