I think you were laughing because you wanted to laugh. I saw the show during a year where I was being incredibly disillusioned with liberalism. I almost went in order to see if Stew could reaffirm my belief in liberalism, but seeing the show only pushed me further and further away. I guess comedy like many things is very contextual and very cultural and relies upon a shared set of norms of values, and because those values were being dismantled in my head, the framework Stew was using to hang his jokes on no longer seemed legitimate to me, and kind of ended up alienating and pissing me off.
