this is far from the worst movie I've ever seen
for crap that I was forced to watch while visiting family at christmas, it was surprisingly bearable. I imagine it was such a huge hit solely because it was slightly better than the other movies parents have to bring their children to.
the previous year, I had to sit through Avatar. THAT was the worst movie I've ever seen. unlike Oz, I am completely baffled how Avatar wasn't a complete box office bomb.
>>64225814

>>64225886
It did pretty well in theaters for a March release, and there were murmurs about a sequel. Not sure why that didn't happen. Maybe James Franco didn't want to keep doing family movies, or it was outranked by Disney's many other franchise priorities.
In hindsight it looks like a dry run for Disney's cycle of live action fairy tale movies.
I still like Franco's performance here. He's well cast as a sleazy con artist, and sometimes he makes this happy stoner face when he's supposed to be amazed by the trippy CG scenery.
>>64226411
I remember they made a lot of toys that didn't seem to be flying off the shelves. Maybe that was part of why they didn't bother with a sequel.

Unfortunately for me, Ana Korrinena was a lot less forgettable than I was counting on after leaving that theater.

Masters of the Universe suffers from the 80's fantasy movie trap of taking the characters away from the fantasy setting and putting them into modern day Earth because it's cheaper and easier to shoot scenes set on modern day Earth.
Beastmaster 2 does the same thing.
