Okay well first Grievous came literally out of nowhere because as we determined

because Lucas blew his load at the start and killed Dooku, instead of having Obi Wan kill him on Pitland. He is established as a badass with his collection of glowsticks, even though his first scene is comprised of him wandering around the command bridge yelling at droids. The next time we see him in an action scene he brags about his 'training' under a man that, as far as he knows, Obi-Wan killed with the help of Anakin. He then proceeds to use his weapons in the flashiest manner instead of like actual weapons, attempting to over power Obi Wan by hitting him with three extra weightless swords than he is used to. After cutting off two of his additional hands, he remembers he can throw people with his mind and Grievous forgets he has robot talon feet that might be useful for anchoring himself down. They then have a chase that ends with a fist fight before Obi Wan remembers he can shoot a gun
As opposed to Finn, who probably had some weapons training in boot camp before being sent off to be a janitor on the hgadfggkiller base. Then at some point, he is reassigned to some lady who thinks mirrors make for good blaster armor and is put on a death squad. He then helps a prisoner break out and escorts him to a TIE fighter where he starts gunning down his co-workers with glee. Some stuff happens that is basically inconsequential because it is really just motion to get to the big action scene at the end. Once we get their Finn pulls out a lightsaber to fight Ren, even though at this point Blasters have been far more effective at wounding him. Finn then proceeds to give Ren a lightsaber paper cut on his shoulder after Ren had already been shot by what is basically a space .50 cal and Ren then just gives him a back massage with his saber.
The only thing they have in common is that they both have held a lightsaber.
