I think the intention was to make those two seem grown up for their age, like how he smokes a pipe and she is all precocious and philosophical. Half the film is adult dramas being played out through children an d the obliviousness of the parents to it and I think this is what makes the film great. The events seem so much more dramatic because their shown through a child/parents eyes. Some kids being lost in a storm isn't really a big deal to anybody other than the kids and their parents, but it kinda becomes a kinda scaled down epic in the film. or maybe that's all just a bit 2deep4u
