the problem with the prequels was that it tried to mix an adult storyline (political battles, internal struggles, etc.) while still pandering to child audiences. The prequels would have worked much better if under better direction. The story was there but the execution was way off.
TFA is definitely worse than the prequels, it is essentially a remake of ANH albeit a worse one.
