Why are these films so fucking well-made? How could three three and a half hour movies hold such high quality all the way through and still be just as impactful today?

Like many great movies of the last 20-30 years it has an almost herculean effort of production value put into it. they had a small army creating props for the movie, all the make up ect... very little cheating with cgi.
I wonder what had more Time put into the development of the movie T2 or the first lotr movie (they refilmed movie 2&3 after seeing the success of the first one i believe)
