More and more characters are fitting that description nowadays. I don't know if it's just writers pandering to the audiences self-insertion and power fantasies or if it's a purposeful move to get rid of the "learning" phase that most protagonists go through.
I think that most modern story telling have very weak villains that do nothing of consequence which results in the heroes coming off as not being impressive.

No, it's pretty well established through choreography that John's an amazing gun user, making it a close combat weapon in engagements, but being forced into a sudden hand to hand situation is what leads to his fuck ups, i.e. getting thrown off a club balcony.
