His only real merit in film history is having given money to Kurosawa to make Ran, which was a masterpiece.
He made 1 good movie however, and also participated in Indiana Jones making.

He's a very good cameraman and special effects guy that somehow, thanks to the New Hollywood boom managed to make movies.
He's not exceptional however, so he's not a genius nor an absolute madman.
