Knights of Ren was an ancient order or whatever, force users but not Jedi or Sith, something else not strictly good or evil.
Ben and other edgelords in Luke's class had found out about this order and decided to bring it back. Hence Ben changing his name to Kylo Ren and him wearing a medieval looking cape and a different, old timey lightsaber. Note that his force skills are also a bit different from what we know (stopping the laser mid air, mind reading) even though he's not particularly powerful -- these are old tricks of the Knights of Ren which he has found out about.
