CHRISTMAS HYYPE
>>
>>64068249

I know Big Finish don't sell physical copies of their early releases now, but they should make a special Christmas exception for The Chimes of Midnight.

They could give it fancy packaging and include a 10min summary of Storm Warning to frame the arc stuff (Charley's death causing the house to paradox, etc.). Then it would be a self-contained brilliant Christmas audio they could market as their own "Christmas special".

Stick 40min of "behind the scenes" on there (since BF didn't do that back in 2002) of McGann, Shearman, and Fisher talking about the story, and you got yourself a lovely little physical purchase.
>>
>>64068294
That would make me drop $20 on it instead of the $3 it's currently at. Comfy idea anon.

/who/ here hype for

THE DIARY OF RIVER SONG
SERIES 1
from
BIG FINISH (We Love Stories)

https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-diary-of-river-song-series-01-1313?range=113

I'm gonna get it for my mum's birthday in January because she loves River, but idk how good it will be. Hopefully pretty good. The New Series BF stuff has been fairly good - UNIT Extinction was good if unremarkable, Torchwood audios are seriously great, War Doctor was mediocre (IMO).
>>
>>64071288
I'll wait for reviews/general reaction here but I'm cautiously hopeful. I like River a lot in some eps (Library, Angels), dislike her in others (Hitler) so we'll see. She can be a great character when done well.

How was UNIT Extinction btw, I was tossing up getting that. I typically love UNIT stories but if it's just full on Osgood quirkiness and Kate "oh lord" then I'm not interested.
>>
>>64070590
Deep Time > The Blood Cell > The Crawling Terror > Royal Blood > Silhouette > Big Bang Generation

>>64071029
I'd probably agree with this.
>>
>>64071349
UNIT Extinction was surprisingly good but don't expect a masterpiece or anything. It's just highly competent sci-fi alien invasion Doctor Whoish drama.

Kate is a competent leader and doesn't do any of the shocked "oh lord" stuff once.

Osgood is not fangirly at all, to the point there's honestly a tiny bit of dissonance with the TV portrayal. Chalk it up to this being pre50th maybe. She develops a sci-fi superweapon thing.

There are 3 new UNIT characters in the audio, a colonel played by Ramon Tikaram, a young hothead (who develops quite interestingly), and a kinda boring agent type.

If you love UNIT stories then yeah you'll love it 100%, but to anyone who's not so hot on UNIT stories I'd give it a miss.

What about Gallifrey Base?
Not even bait, sonetimes I enjoy reading the BF section of their forum.
>>
>>64071502
It's not really a good comparison. Big Bang Generation has a very jokey tone, and almost requires a knowledge of Benny's audio cast to fully appreciate. Twelve is closer to his warmer S9 persona than S8, which can be disconcerting if you're not use to it. There's a whole lot of time spent on characters not called the Doctor--this is good, because it gives the audience a chance to learn about Benny's cast. Unfortunately, it didn't work completely for me (and I've read some of Benny's books, so I have more emotional connection to the characters than those who haven't.) If you've never read or heard of Benny, this is even worse, because this book is really a crossover between Benny adventurers and Doctor Who.

The book is a very "love-it-or-hate-it" book, so whether or not you'll like it is hard to tell. And the failings and strengths of that book are nothing like Sleep No More's. So it's hard to give you a comparison.

I can tel you, though, that the book features a talking hamster complaining to the Doctor that he posted her falling on her bum on Galactic Youtube. Whether or not you find that funny is the real decider if you like the book.

Honestly I like going to GallifreyBase to check out the autism.
The AI/Ratings thread for Hell Bent somehow turned into an argument over why Eccleston left DW and why he didn't return in the 50th. There was also another thread on there that somehow turned into an argument over Peter Capaldi vs Planet Of The Ood. Some of the stuff there is so bad its good imo.

someone on GB made a post saying that in america around the time the TVM aired no one knew or cared about doctor who except for geeks. which is true. someone replied to him saying it wasn't true and used the fact that 11 appeared on the cover of tv guide in 2012 to try and prove his point........ what the fuck

They're getting fact mixed up with fiction.

There's less autism in the sections that aren't about the TV show (you can still find some, but then again, it's the Internet). They're also slower, so it's easier to find the threads that have some quality in them.

>>64071736
I listen to the BF Benny series, but I can't say I care much for the "new" team (Ruth, Jack, teenage Peter). If it had been Jason, Bev and Adrian in the book, I might have been more interested.
Also, there are two problems I have had with all the Gary Russell books I've read so far. One, the narrator is always making digressions and infodumps. This can be amusing if used sparingly and/or for comical purposes, like, say, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In Russell's novels, it's neither of those things: I'll never forget the bit in Placebo Effect where he introduces a new Foamasi character, infodumps his whole backstory on you and then immediately kills him off. It's incredibly annoying, not to mention lazy. Two, the plotting is shit and nothing really interesting happens until the end. Oh, and there's the fact that he always manages to use continuity references in the most annoying way possible.

there was a thread on GB about moffat and someone was like "having read all the posts in thread i'm so glad I didn't watch the recent season" and then started complaining about it as if he's seen it. what the fuck is wrong with people.
>>
>>64072499

>>
>>64072540
you might as well keep watching the show if you're going to complain about it still.
if I ever hated the show as much as I see people on GB do i'd just stop watching and move on.
>>

>>
>>64072691
end of time is relevant

>>
>>64072753

The Christmas Invasion is relevant.
>>
>>64072882

>>
>>64072968

It's not Donna's first story. It's Tennant's first with Rose.
>>
>>64072882
So are The Snowmen, The Runaway Bride and arguably The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.
The only ones that are entirely skippable are Voyage of the Damned, The Next Doctor and A Christmas Carol.
The Husbands of River Song looks skippable so far.

>>64072968
Yes, you do. Apart from the obviouse reason (Who is this and how does the Doctor know her?) Donna's final scene in Journey's End where she turns back to how she was at the start of The Runaway Bride doesn't have the same impact otherwise.

Would it even be possible for the Doctor to regenerate into a disabled person? The point of regeneration is to heal your body, so by rights that shouldn't be possible. 10 even grew his hand back after the regeneration.

Disabled people aren't disabled by choice. Given the choice, they'd prefer to be able-bodied.

>implying the Monk, the War Chief and the Master aren't the same Time Lord
In all seriousness, I like that theory. In Terror of the Autons, the Time Lords describe the Master as the Doctor's worst enemy, but it's a bit awkward because we've never seen him before. This way, we've already seen him face Hartnell and Troughton.
It also shows us a couple of incarnations of the Master before the thirteenth one seen in The Deadly Assassin, apart from Delgado.
It's a pity that pretty much every EU story ever contradicted this.

Remember that time the entire universe was literally destroyed and amy wished it back into existence in its entirety despite only being aware of a small fraction of what the universe had in it?

Or the time clara went into the doctor's time stream and without fail found and defeated the great intelligence every time he tried to mess up time, and then when the doctor jumps in he says he can get back out 'because it's impossible and you're my impossible girl'?

Or the time where literally anything about the series 6 arc?

Clara getting a tardis is absolutely trivial on the scale of moffucks, you autists don't realise how bad it used to be

Wrong. She only wished her parents, the Doctor and the TARDIS. It was the Pandorica that contained atoms from the entire universe and created them again.

The time temporal agents said the Doctor's death was a fixed point in time, a historical fact. The Doctor changed this fixed point in time by reversing a change in this fixed point in time and then faking his death. Please hold your horses. S5 has a fucking great arc with a beautiful ending, you plebs should really rewatch it someday.

That said, Clara running away with a TARDIS to become Doctor Two is a great ending to the story that began with Flatline. Everyone says "she should have died, it would have been a cautionary tale about how you can't be like Dr. Who!". But the thing about cautionary tales is that they are meant to caution you about reality, and the Doctor isn't fucking real. It would essentially have been a cautionary tale about why you shouldn't aspire to be a hero who saves people, which is not a very Doctor Who-like sentiment.
What does end up happening is that the Doctor does what he does, he breaks the rules and tries to find a better story for his beloved companion. He still loses her in the end, but in the process she is able to transcend into a bittersweet Doctor-like existence without him. It's really nice. In a way it really is what she deserved, both good and bad.

It was for both their sakes, if he ever tried to find her (which he would) the whole thing would just start all over again. He had become way too attached after like 1000 years of knowing her. The only way to fall out of the narrative of Doctor Who entirely is to be forgotten by the Doctor

Like they were actually forced to make it on the last second of filming.
>>
>>64077721
Here's the thing. You said "offseason /who/ isn't big finish general."

Is it not literally /bfg/? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a /who/ mainstay who posts daily, I am telling you, specifically, in board culture, everyone calls offseason /who/ big finish general. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "it's the same amount of BF discussion as before, just with less posters overall" you're referring to the userbase grouping of shitposters, which includes things from Friendly Neighborhood Anon's meme spamming to the idkwia poster.

So your reasoning for calling offseason /who/ not /bfg/ is because random people "don't talk about big finish in it?" Let's get OPs and new series leaks in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone /who/vians /who/res? It's not one or the other, that's not how the terminology works. They're both. A /who/vian is a /who/res and a member of the /who/ family. But that's not what you said. You said a /who/res is a /who/ user, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the /tv/ /___/res, which means you'd call star was threads, capeshit threads, and other non-BF/DW discussion too, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?
>>
>>64077737

I still think 12's new sonic is an absolute mess of color with a very unpleasant palette
