The theater was packed, I mean FULL. The front row in the theater was full...and the place was rife with asshole couples wandering around looking for seats when the trailers were being shown.

What's the problem with this, exactly? Big movies should be about the narrative. Making an aesthetic art film doesn't require a gigantic budget and the weight of a studio behind it. You can still have good cinema and fun movies. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Star Wars films were never particularly deep, but they weren't exactly turn your brain off hollywood blockbusters either (more true for the OT than the prequels). TFA is basically empty. The only new character with any depth is Kylo Ren and his characterization is fairly minimal.
