He did Fruitvale Station too, is it any good?

There are many good "black" directors.

The fact is that people of color, women and other minorities don't have the same opportunities that straight white male have. It's only natural that there are less of them making movies
>>
F. Gary Gray
McQueen
Fuqua
Lee
Daniels
Coogler
Duverny
Daniels

all have award winning talent.

Fuck off. I've known that trash man was a hack from the very start but I can't believe that anybody is still riding the bandwagon after 12 years a slave being so horrendously bad as it was. I could see how a low level cinema viewer could be fooled by Hunger or Shame but even a 9 year old should be able to tell that 12 years is an absolute trainwreck.
>>

Ava is average.

New Jack City is awful. Just awful. Van Peebles is a nice guy (I've met him), but a horrifically bad filmmaker. I hate to say it cause I like him.

Spike Lee has 3 or 4 good movies....but the rest....oh fuck, they are all-time horrible. I mean, maybe 20% of his movies are good, the other 80% are awful. And he's a nasty guy to boot.

Tyler Perry is low IQ garbage.

Fuqua is the one on this list I really respect. He's got some chops.

>>64062597
he is talented for sure and seems likable and positive as a person but his film catatlogue is utter shit

12YaS is basically porn - liberal porn. The character are caricatures, visions and ideals stereotyped to the extreme. His cinematography is inexistent: he aims at a Haneke-esque, fly on the wall POV but clearly doesn't know how to use it effectively. There are no arcs, no emotional connection, as McQueen tries to communicate his 'point' by relentlessly shoving gore in your face for almost three hours. 12 Years a Slave attempts to shock you into agreeing to its agenda. It has no argument, no dialetics, just pure ideological horror.

Thats probably the one he's best known for.

But his version of Oldboy was just so goddamned stupid. It was literally copypasted. He should have done something new instead of repeating the same exact story beats as Chanwook Park's film.

>>64063337
How is NJC horrible? It had great characters, a badass villain, really great camera work, and solid acting.

Like I said, Spike is a living meme. A bad joke. He hates the word Nigger but fucking acts like a goddamn Sambo Mammy blackface stereotype for the 21st century. Fucking hell.
>>
>>64063734
When I was a kid, everybody talked it up like it was some gritty Scorcese thriller....when I actually saw it in college I can say that I was bitterly disappointed.

I was even into blaxploitation at the time too...so I had a tolerance for slightly amatuer yet endearing films. But even still, it left me cold.

Again, it's too bad, because on this list MVP is the nicest guy, and I'm rooting for him.

I don't think cinema is something blacks are predisposed to excel at. This isn't to say that there aren't great black directors (there certainly are), but they aren't typically adept in the visual/spatial department.

Blacks are much better performers on average. They are naturally magnanimous, outgoing, gregarious, and charismatic. There isn't the sort of navel-gazing introspection there, the inward-facing neurosis, that drove the great directors (Bergman, Kubrick, Welles, etc.)

I'm not saying there will never be an African master of cinema. Averages are just that: large tendencies in populations. The greatest director of all time may turn out to be black, but I wouldn't count on it.

And to protest this, to call this racism, one would also have to accept it's unfair that most of the greatest basketball players in history were African American. I don't think that's true. I think different groups of people excel at different skills in aggregate.

I wish we could see more technically skilled black directors (like Coogler), but I'm not holding my breath. The full-blooded blacks without white admixture seem especially poor technicians.

Nice argument you little cuckold. Keep drinking from the broth of the meme opinion you mindless drone. I'm literally holding a loaded gun to my head right now. What have you done for art?
>>
>>64063727
sometimes, /tv/ does have brains. kudos for not drinking the liberal koolaid

In addition to all that, 12YaS even makes the most horrendous mistake a slavery movie could ever make...it makes slavery seem like it wasn't that bad. Seriously, look at the end, he hasn't aged a day! It's like he went on a slightly rotten holiday camping trip, there's no sense of time progression in that garbage at all.

While I appreciate your honesty, just because you were personally disappointed doesnt mean the film itself is terrible, some people judge movies based on their own criteria, and thats okay.
For me, you have to have me at the opening scene. Take NJC for example. The whole opening really sets the tone as a sort of rough and tumble crime drama with some dark humor and solid action. If you manage to hold a consistent tone throughout your film, you have succeeded as far as Im concerned. But not everyone thinks like that.

I can see where you're coming from though, some of the secondary characters needed more depth, like Judd Nelson's cop and Nino Brown's crew. Duh Duh Man gets a pass though, because he's developed enough for his role in the story.
