My daughter was a real big fan of Hellboy. It all started a week before Christmas, when I was watching it with a few beers whilst she was supposed to be asleep. She came down, and before I could tell her to go back to bed, she asked who that cool looking guy was.
I hesitated for a second...she was only 7, maybe it was the beers, but I decided to let her sit with me and watch, despite feeling she might be a little young.
"This is Hellboy." I said. "He might look scary, but he is a good person on the inside." She told me that she thought he doesn't look scary and she seemed to be engrossed with the movie. It took me by surprise.
I ended up buying her a TV for her room, and I had also bought Hellboy and Hellboy 2. She was ecstatic and wanted to watch the 2nd right there and then. I told her we'd watch it in the evening, we had a family party we needed to go to. She wasn't one to throw tantrums, she gladly accepted.
Up to March, she must have watched them more than 100 times. You know how kids get when they find a tv show/movie they love...they'll watch it over and over again, somehow not getting bored. I couldn't believe it was Hellboy, but you have to admit, it's pretty cool. Unfortunately, March began her struggle with cancer. As you can imagine, I felt helpless and sick to my stomach with every passing second, but I stayed strong for her. Around May was when she was admitted to hospital full time. To make her stay more comfortable I brought her a portable DVD player. We'd watch...you guessed it...Hellboy. During one session of Hellboy, she looked me right in the eyes...I turned sensing something was wrong.
"What's wrong, Madison?" I said. What she said next broke my heart.
"Do you think Hellboy would be able make me better?"
My heart sank, I didn't know what to say. All I managed to say was "I think he'd give it a really good shot." She closed the player and hugged me, she began to cry, I did too. I could feel her spine on my palm.

By this point she was so weak she couldn't walk by herself, but when I told her, it was almost as if she returned to her normal self, even just for a split second. We both cried, and then I strategically placed the Hellboy DVD's (and some Hellboy toys) in places Ron would see them.
