Who knows? It's hard to assess how the thing acts because they all seem to act very inconsistently in the movie, leading me to believe that the person it is imitating heavily influences it's actions. MacReady was the smart, paranoid one of the group who would rather doom everyone than let himself be killed. He didn't care about the others, certainly held to qualms about killing them if they threatened him. If he was infected then the thing that imitates him would take on those traits, so it would happily murder other things if he felt they would get in the way of his plan of being discovered and brought back to civilization.

I don't think the thing has a canon, personally. Canon is for large sprawling universes like star wars and star trek. An IP of 2 films and a video game which are all considered "canon" yet often contradict each other should just be taken as a series of loosely connected stories (alternate universes or whatever nerd shit) and not as a whole cohesive narrative IMO.

The Thing is campy trash too, just executed fucking perfectly. Escape from New York, Halloween, The Fog, and They Live are all pretty decent movies, he just really nailed it with this one. I think the reason for it being great is less to do with him, and more to do with Kurt Russel, Ennio Morricone (the composer) and whoever did the special effects.

So Mac knew at the end that Childs was the Thing.
