i hate that science fiction concepts now only have to be some kind of new science fiction logic. they used to have to have some kind of correlate in real world concerns - political, ethical, etc. now it's just "well, let's make a convoluted plot mechanism that we don't fuck up with." it's not patrician to just have a sleek plot. it's the first fucking step of making a film.
