How was he able to so easily stop the blaster shot from Poe early in the movie, but not the bowcaster shot from Han later?

Reality is, most of the similarities to ANH are on a superficial level (there's a desert planet and a death star and a cantina etc) and all of the characters have different personalities to the OT cast and react to the events happening around them differently. Ultimately the similarities are negligible unless you completely miss the point of the movies and don't care about characters

They were looking for Rey, and it was a throwback to the old series and the architecture of the death star. Hence the rail-less bridge.
