What are your favourite things about the Star Wars universe? I like the podracing in fact more than a lot of the actual spaceship battles in the series.

I question the necessity of having giant retractable doors that expose your entire hangar so that it can have a runway for ships that don't need one. Minor nitpick, but it's always bothered me.

I used to be a total pro at this and beat all the best times on the Blockbuster cartridge. Speaking of n64 rentals I once kept an overnight rental of Ocarina of Time from Video Ezy for like a week and my mum got super madd at me. Also one of my old primary school friends rented Smash Bros 64 and never returned it that asshole no wonder I could never find it on the shelf for months. I fucking love the clones. They're way better than the stormtroopers and have a ton more personality to them. They're also rugged, fighting an actual war on the ground instead of being stationed inside a ship. Their armor also looks super badass, and don't even get me started on how much I love the vehicles they use.

The Podracing exists scene is to establish what a great pilot Anakin is
And it also exists because Lucas had intended a similar scene in Star Wars with Luke racing his T16, again to show what a great pilot he is
It was cut because the effects for it weren't turning out very well
They were originally having a lot of problems with the special effects with quite inexperienced people trying to do them in camera, with front projection, optically, etc
At one point they'd been working for 3 or 4 months and had one shot to show for it
Kurtz had to kick some butts to get things into gear
The prequels were very much about doing bigger and better things he wasn't satisfied with or couldn't do the first time around
The problem with both scenes is that they are too long and stop the movie dead in its tracks

The Pod Race is one of the few things in the prequels that showed the brilliance of Lucas that was lurking beneath that surface of sheer incompetence. The pod race accomplishes so damn much in one (slightly too long) scene. It establishes some of the culture of star wars, mostly for the outer-rim and hutt controlled planets. It shows us a shitload of new aliens doing interesting things. It shows us all kind of great new technology at work. It harkons back to chariot racing and is a really strong indicator of how much the Old Republic was set up like the Roman Empire. It established anakin as a good pilot and a gifted force-user (even if he's too damn young), and it was a pay-off for the tension set up between anakin and sebulba in earlier scenes.
Just wish the rest of the prequels had been this well thought out.

people complain about the race, but the real problem with the tatooine sequence was that it had like 3 or 4 scenes elaborating on the increasingly complicated bet qui gon had with watto. plus all the scenes just hanging out at anakin's house. truncate those scenes down to one or maybe two and the pod race doesnt seem nearly so long or intrusive
