I'm not an expert in dogfights, but I imagine the main issue is that it seems unnatural that all the combat is packed together and close to the ground. I guess it was to show the parallel between Finn and Poe fighting together when they don't know it.
The aerial battles in general were a bit too cartoonish for my liking, just lacked tension or realism, nowhere near as good as the battle of Yavin or Endor.

Not that anon, but with the state of CG at the time (the necessity of using such in the scenes and features where you have so many characters) filming real actors with make-up and costumes would have clashed horribly with the CG. It would have been worse.
