I watched empire strikes back recently and my favourite parts were the ones that took place on the bridge of the star destroyer because you knew shit was about to go down, the tone is very serious between the senior officers
(who are the right age for their rank, JJ has avoided casting anyone over the age of 35 wherever possible)

That was indeed very troublesome. They're all a bunch of edgy youngsters. It works for Ren, but for the rest of the command staff? Where's the experienced old people. It's a missed opportunity too. Imagine the bickering and appropriate comedy (if handled well) between Ren and the older more experienced commanders.

It's just the whole vibe of the movie.
The OT and the PT made jokes at times, sure.
But they seemed to take themselves more seriously.
TFA has a joke once every 5 minutes as if they're afraid of losing their audience.
Some of the lines Poe says, for instance, sound like they'd be more at home coming out of Iron Man's mouth.
It feels like Whedon was slated to direct so that's the script they made, but neglected to change one he quit.
