He failed to earn the respect of the men he'd command, making him a failure as a leader.

He made the mistake of being incompetent AND being an asshole. Anybody with the smallest amount of authority will tell you you can't do that.

In the late 1960s, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol.[9] The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited out the other side of his head. This severed his optic nerves and left him blind.[9] He was later moved to a VA assisted living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. Sobel resided there for his last seventeen years until his death due to malnutrition on September 30, 1987.[9] No services were held for Sobel after his death.[9]

When re-watching BoB I wonder how much is just lies?

>Was Sobel really that bad a tactician, or was he just a git and the officers/NCO(s) hated him?

>Was Winters as nice as he appears on screen, or in reality was he a hard nosed field officer who picked men to almost certainly die die on force recon duties?

It just comes across as too perfect on occasion...

Career military here. Never seen one gun fired in anger, but I spent seventeen years welding in bases across the world.

This guy is literally the stereotype of a bad officer. He didn't break the law, he didn't do anything that would get himself CMed, but he was a shitty officer and he didn't command any respect whatsoever.

This is a thing most people don't understand. We talk shit on officers because it's mandatory. It's a class warfare thing. You have to talk shit on COs. But the truth is they are better than us. Maybe raw out of the academy they're a bit green, but there's so much support for them, so many people for them to learn from, that basically they're the only thing that sets the Army apart from a bunch of civilians in dumb outfits.

For an officer. An OFFICER. Given command of an INFANTRY PLATOON to fucking fail them, or at least to fail to control them to the degree that they protest to a superior officer is fucking unheard of. If that happens he should never have made it into the program. Yes, the soldiers should be condemned for doing it, but if a bunch of sheep burn down a house, who do you blame, the sheep or the shepherd?
>>
>>63997090
how is it the shepherds fault if the sheep burn down a house? how are the sheep able to burn anything?
>>
>>63993538

I did clinicals in a nursing home and it takes a LONG time to kill someone with malnutrition. Either the place he was staying in had HORRIBLE resources or the guy was a huge asshole that led people to hate him so much that they literally gave him shit food or starved him

Every single military friend I have have massive complaints about the VA. Apparently, even the employees there have trouble too. I read that some doctors get constant bladder infections because they literally have no time to get up due to the huge amount of patients they have to treat/diagnose.
>>
>>63997777
The VA has had several large scale scandals. The care varies wildly depending on location from just decent to absolute you'd be better off going to a free clinic garbage tier

>>
>>63997833
Money that should be going to the VA gets wasted on useless military spending, useless government spending and welfare/transfer payments/EBT.

The .gov has to fly in H1B doctors because it can't figure out a system that makes doctors want to work for the VA.
So shit/lower tier doctors, or forced to rely on military doctors (officers with rank) from military hopsitals because they can't figure out a system that would incentivize doctors/surgeons/hospitals to loan out a doctor for a day or a few hours a week.

Sobel came across as an excellent training officer, but a crap tactician.
The reason he and so many other officers fucked up in the field, was that back then they just carted them off to the front as soon as they were done with basic training. Add to that the blatant political appointments of division commanders and upwards (like Eisenhower, who OK'd Market Garden), and you have a lot of dead soldiers where you shouldn't have.

Sobel did exactly what he was supposed to do. He played the "bad guy" by challenging the trainees and making things completely not fair for them.

In response they got in shape, learned to work together, and quickly learned that the army was an inefficient wreck that put retards in charge of your life. It's a hard fucking job but in the end Sobel saved a lot of the trainees' lives.

Was he an incompetent asshole? Yes. Did he perform his duties? Yes.

The krauts wouldn't let them wait 30min after eating before making them do physical activities so why would he?
>>
>>64001770

Because they were going to face more fucked up things than that once they were deployed. The theory at the time was that if you made the training more difficult than the war itself, your soldiers would be better able to handle the shock and fatigue because they wouldn't be strangers to it.

Hes kind of like a foil to that officer in Platoon. Hes the same thing, except hes really nice and trys to be cool and likable to his soldiers, so they just walk all over him and Barnes really runs shit.

>how was it a bad idea before it happened
The plan relied on literally EVERYTHING going EXACTLY as planned. So when the Germans held at Nijmegen and blew up at least one of the first bridges, not to mention held up XXX Corps along Hell's Highway for as long as they did, the plan showed exactly how shit it was. Not to mention it relied on bad intelligence, where reports from the Dutch resistance about German troop concentrations were ignored.
Montgomery wasn't a military genius, his success in the desert relied mostly on superiour numbers, and he even ingerited the battle plan from his predecessor.

>can't figure out a system that would incentivize doctors/surgeons/hospitals to loan out a doctor for a day or a few hours a week.
Incentives like this thing called "money".
I bet the wounded soldiers spent more money in munitions during their service, than the government spent on their treatment.
