But that is his point. They said before in interviews before the movie was out that Kylo Ren is not necessarily a typical villain. He definitely has some character to him, and from the movie, it's quite obvious that he pretty much needed the mask to be intimidating to anyone. The point is that he is no Darth Vader. I thought that was pretty clear with the whole "You're afraid, that you'll never be as strong as Darth Vader!" line.
And from an in-universe perspective, that's probably why he has the cross-guard lightsaber. He's just so fucking desperate to make an image of himself like his grandfather. I find it rather interesting, actually.
And to balance out the fucking edgelord teenager, we have actual villains to satisfy people's taste, like Supreme Leader Sheev and General Nazi.

We all thought this guy was going to be a cash-grab vader rip off. Another spooky edgy McGrimDark masked sith lord. Shockingly he's actually a character with conflict and flaws and his spooky appearance is nothing more than a front that he puts on to seem more menacing and powerful than he actually is.
It's fucking wonderful and one of the most brilliant things in the film (which isn't saying much).
Now going forward the villain is going to have actual character development. You can bet that he is going to be a real piece of shit in the next movie because he was so thoroughly humiliated in this movie and he got fucked up, and he took that final step to fully shed himself of the lightside.

If he does join the Resistance, and begins fighting for the sake of others, willing to die for the wellbeing of the galaxy, then he is no longer with the Dark Side. That's how the Force works.
