If the EU is still canon, the lightsaber is almost purely ceremonial and known to be inferior weapon. The only reason it's feared at all is because of the Jedi holding it and the magic he is capable of (like blocking blaster beams). I thought the movie made it obvious Finn was force sensitive due to Kylo recognizing him and then Snokes acknowledging a disturbance in the force before Rey's awakening.
Kind of like how they made it outright obvious that Luke trained Kylo who was the person who attacked the academy, sending Luke into hiding afterwards. It also heavy handedly hinted towards Rey being one of the people to survive the academy and dumped in Jakku far away from the Republic prior to the rise of the First Order.
