why are you so hung up on originality? i'm not going to argue that 7 doesn't try to hide that it's treading very familiar territory with ANH, but all the stories we love are inspired by and are often a re-telling of older ones. 7 plays it too safe, but for the most part it worked.
who cares if a film has "original" and "ambitious" ideas if it falls flat on its face? i don't see what is ambitious about a story we all know the ending to. it was the journey that had potential, but all of it was wasted. 3 had some brief bright spots but, on the whole it's not a good movie.
i think it's pretty telling when the only lines people quote from the prequels are generally bad lines that made us laugh unintentionally or cringe to remember. plenty of them come from 3, where the character of Darth Vader was almost ruined.

you can spin meaningless hypotheticals all day and it won't change the reality that we live in. the prequels are a muddled mess - they can't be "refined", they need to be re-written from the ground up. fans have tried for years to fix them with scores of different edits and mash-ups, but no matter how you re-arrange garbage you're still getting garbage.
they aren't the worst films ever made or anything, but they're decidedly below average. without the legacy of the OT behind them, i don't think we'd be talking about them today. the only potential comes from the possibilities behind the backstory of one of the greatest film trilogies of all time - not from anything the prequels actually did.
i mean really it's impossible to live up to the cultural legacy that the OT has left behind, but at least TFA made some attempt to bridge the gap and give audiences what they wanted. at the end of the day no one is going to change your mind about how you perceive the film, but critics and fans on the whole have enjoyed TFA a lot more than any of the prequel films, so JJ and Kasdan must have done something right.

Honestly, I'd rank TFA as second best if it wasn't for Ren and Rey.
Ren was such a disappointment, especially because in the first half of the movie he was such an imposing presence. Second half, after he takes the mask off to reveal Adam Driver and gets BTFO by almost everyone he comes into contact with at every turn, just destroyed it for me. I wish he just kept the mask on at all times outside of when he met Han, and the Rey vs Ren mind battle scene didn't happen.
Rey was just way too good at everything she did. I appreciated the few times when she displayed weakness, but I wish they were more severe and numerous.
