Biggest blunder ever. The movie is a gigantic critical and financial disaster. Soon we should be hearing about how the top Disney execs committed suicide. Disney might just go bankrupt.

Is it expected to do 200 million at four Chinese theater chains, or 200 million throughout the nation?
>>
>>63978055
Most of the target audience has already seen the movie. Considering drops and everything, by my estimates, Star Wars will end up earning 650M domestic and about 1B-1.3B in foreign markets, 20% of which is going for withholding taxes alone. The actual earning out of it is going to be risible if it earns anything at all.

Avatar was good investment. Star Wars wasn't. Simple as that. I already knew this movie was going to fail way before the release, and everything is just happening as I already had predicted. Keep delusional

He's not wrong though.
The film and merchandise must make AT THE VERY LEAST 8 billion dollars, which is unlikely.
While I won't say the movie flopped, it simply was not worth the investment.
4 billions + 200 mil + another 200 mil.
Add taxes, inflation, etc. and you can see why this movie isn't a success, purely economically speaking.
But of course this won't stop the franchise. They paid a lot of gold for the cow, they're going to milk every single drop it has left.

>>

>>
4 billion was a coup.

Star Wars is going to be milked forever. This film itself is going to get to at least 1.8 billion. Add another 1.8 billion and maybe 2.0 billion for IX since it'll be marketed as the "last one".

Plus untold merchandising revenue and profit.
>>
>>63979487
what ass did you pull this 8 billion dollar number out of?

>>
>>63979782
its not outlandish to think they will one day reboot the entire franchise

redo 1-6 in like 2025
>>
>>63979541
They will have to waste as much money in the second installment to make roughly the same ammount back (AKA No profit). And most of the hype is fake/media generated and this movie didn't blow the normies away like the original property Avatar did with its 3D experience.

Face it fanboys, your franchise is over. Pack up your things and leave while is isnt still not too embarrassing
>>
>>63977763
>chinese will not release movie because imdb rating drops from 8.8 to 8.7

Actually the movie started at 9.5. IMDB ratings always start out way too high and take a few months to balance out. It's almost guaranteed to stay in the 8 range though.

Also it's performance in China will have nothing to do with the IMDB rating.

How the fuck is this irrelevant if your talking about investment.

They didn't buy Star Wars so they could beat Avatar they bought it so they could make a shit ton of money. There will be a 500+ million dollar Star Wars movie every year for the next 20 years. And every year they will sell a billion dollars worth of toys.

Disney paid 4 billion for the rights to star wars

So about 1.33 billion per movie. Budget for the movie and marketing is 400 million let's say.

BREAK EVEN POINT
1.73 Billion

Ticket Sales Alone:
610 Million in about 4 days.

So about 35% of the way through. I think it will definitely beat Jurassic Park and beating Avatar isnt impossible either.

If we wanted to be super conservative estimate of doing only slightly better than JP (which currently has $1.6 Billion) The Force Awakens would just break even.

On its own as a movie, it manages impressive rev numbers but the amount of investment was also massively high.

However take into consideration the sales of toys, merch, games, books etc.... AND tha disney owns Star Wars forever now so that 4 Billion dollars dont need to be actualize over just the 3 movies.

So to sum it up, Disney won't make making that much money from TFA, but they hold the rights to a cultural icon, which can be milked for decades to come.

SW already is one of the most recognizable franchises in pop culture definitely more widely known the JP and Avatar. Will episode 7 be memorable? Yes, how much depends on what Disney is able to deliver. Also you may not like it, I myself I'm not a big fan, but Disney is gonna market this more than anything to a new generation of kids.

The movie didn't cost 400m to make either. It's closer to half that.

This is how Hollywood budgets work. 50% goes to actually making the movie. 45% is reinvested back into the studio. 5% goes back into producers pockets.

Most of the reported budget isn't actually is never spent and stays within the studio. That's why every so often theirs a movie that by all accounts should never get a sequel does. That's why on paper, no movie in the last 30 years has made profit.
>>
>>63980194
Oh I see what your saying now m8, exactly. Anyone who thinks this wasn't the best business transaction since like the Louisiana Purchase is retarded.

>>63980177
They bumped up their projection figure which was originally at 9-10 mill to 13 million sold by March 2016.

They have 7 million console sales right now, .35 physical PC sales as well. Neither of those figures contains the #'s for digital sales on PC/PS4/Xbox One. They have definitely hit their original sale goal and have made a decent profit, they're going to fail to hit 13 million however.

This is bad for EA who changed the figures, not bad for Disney cause they don't give a fuck. It's not their shareholders who are going to be dissapointed.

It still will be a flop and no reddit meme words will change that. Heck, even it made Titanic money it would still be a flop because the project and investment was so expensive. If movie sucks then they wont sell toys either. Its all chained and interconnected.

Disney execs on suicide watch, no one will ever see these 4B back again.
>>
>>63977523
Oh its you again, the same guy from Fury Road threads with your shit maths and insane marketing values.

"Budget of 150mill, marketting will be 300mill, so the movie must make 987mill or its a flop!"

Unfortunately, I fucking miss the old Battlefronts.

That's just EA though, they take franchises and just drive them into the ground.

>>63980702
That's not true, read up on the diminishing numbers by the day. This movie is tracking similar to Avatar in terms of percentages right now while having made more money in the same time frame.

We really can't make any actual claims though until we've at least seen two more weekends #'s, Avatar had virtually no drop off in it's weekend box offices for months and in some weeks it went up, If star wars can keep bringing people back to spend 60-80 million dollars every weekend then we can star making claims about it beating Avatar.
>>
>>63980818
No retard, the number is double the production budget to break even, because the advertising budget is double. It's not double both numbers. TFA is already profitable.
>inb4 muh $4 billion
>>
>>63980818
it's gonna make way more than 800 million internationally.

it's going to end up:

domestic:700-800 million
foreign: 1-1.1 billion
>>
Will it out do JW in Chiena?
To be fair, Chiena fucking loves dinosaurs because of dragons.
>>
>>63980502
I think you need to read that again. The 135 showing all 7 films are INCLUDED in the $100m take, not the sole cause of it. Use some common sense for fuck's sake.
>>
>>63980888
I've been searching for a copy of Battlefront 2 for so long for the Xbox and all of them are like 70-80 bucks.

Why. why. why.
>>
>>63980867

They've already made 5 billion in Star Wars toy sales. IN ONE YEAR you fucking goof

they're raking in the $$$$
>>
>>63980702
>theirs a shitload of highly anticipated movies coming out this Jan.
>a shitload
Which ones of these are "highly anticipated"? I doubt there's much crossover between the audiences of Star Wars and Fifty Shades, and Kung Fu Panda 3 is over a month away.
>>
>>63980867
Are you a fucking idiot?

There's two more of these films to make.

That's not even counting the merchandise, games, etc...
>>
>>63980739
no im not forgetting anything

im saying of the $57m thursday, 3m of it was from the marathon sales at most

probably closer to 2m since you know none of those were sold out

Star Wars will do big numbers on Christmas weekend.

It'll probably beat Attack of the Clones and if it's lucky might just barely beat Revenge of the Sith but I'm not holding my breath that it will pass Phantom Menace's lifetime gross.
>>
>>63981077
A day after families gather and discuss how shitty the plot was?

Right. Flop confirmed.
>>
>>63981129

It nearly beat Attack of the Clones lifetime revenue in a single week.

It hasn't even fucking opened in China.
>>
>>63980985
>>
>>63981132

The movie has been getting decent reviews and audiences in general have liked it. Keep in mind that a lot of people are not at work right now and kids are off school. Right now children are going through SW mania.
>>
>>63981132

i don't think you understand what that word means, friendo
>>
>>63980985
The Revenant
Hateful 8
(Technically these open in December but go wide in Jan)
Kung Fu Panda

That shitty looking 5th Wave could be a surprise. Never know with those young adult novel adaptations
The Finest Hours might bomb, but it might do ok.

Compare that to what normally is released in January. This Jan is VERY strong in a month that usually consists of Nic Cage movies.
>>

You must be stupid if you think it won't pass the Phantom Menace

have you not seen the review, the numbers, and the ratings average people have been giving it on movie site? Also look at the merch/toys revenue, the franchise is strongest with children.

$200M est. budget = $500M to start turning a profit

>>

TFA needs to make a lifetime gross of $17.9 Trillion in order to break even.
>>
>>63981434
Now THIS is the number I've been looking for.
>>
>>63980985
>Kung Fu Panda 3 is over a month away.

Beating Avatar is a long term game.

Jurassic World made 1 billion dollars in 10 days. But only made another 600 million for the rest of its run topping out at 1.6 billion.

Avatar made 30million dollars domestically 11 weeks after it's release. Most movies aren't even still in the theater 2 and a half months later.

Race
a competition between runners, horses, vehicles, etc. to see which is the fastest in covering a set course.

Marathon
any contest, event, or the like, of great, or greater than normal, length or duration or requiring exceptional endurance

you know why disney do more and more films about cars? Each movie had a cost of 200 with 300 of advertising. Each movie do 100 of profit, but billions on merchandising and licenses.

The films are just a "reminder" about how the franchise is still alive and make you reminder you can buy their stuff for xmas.

Nielsen's report on Thursday didn't forecast future sales, but Wall Street analysts expect that $5 billion-$6 billion in merchandise will be sold worldwide in the first year after Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens opens. For perspective, Walt Disney sold $5 billion in Frozen merchandise in its last fiscal year.

And 90% or more of that goes to the toy manufacturers and retailers. Disney only gets a "taste" of that $5b. But still, not bad.
>>
>>63982413
5 billion in star wars toys sales already

you're LITERALLY retarded
