Basically Lucas was classic film making. Not the best one, cause of expressive limits, but nonetheless solid.
It was perfect for the time of the first trilogy - 1977-1983, which was a period of restoration after the europeanisms of the past decade - and a bit more static for those years (1999 - 2006) - of the second one. Which had the quality, with its placid and solemn transparency, to valorize the strongest points of the saga such as: characters look, their bidimensional behavior, many details of the set design and setting. A result of too many influences careless mixed together in a kid of organic way. that allowed this opera for children and teenagers to be appreciated even by a more grown up public not inclined for a demanding view. With the new production and direction there is none of this anymore today

Not a classy reboot tho, like nolan batman, but a forced update to the current trends for a public more inclined looking at their computers then a film screen. Abrams direction infact is basically todays sloppy action movies direction, which reminds of the video game world. In the actions scenes it is very effective, but having a camera only focused on the action and too many close-up, damage the characters and the story.
Even the so marketed "back to the real settings" is a poor choice since most of the time the sets themselfs feel bland and have no theatrical value.
