I was about to post something like this, but at the same time they're widely regarded as children's novels, and Middle-earth is just a setting for linguistic autism to take place.
I agree with you though, LotR should be a at least a tier above the others, if only for all dem oscars.
The plot for all of them is the monomyth/hero's journey.
