I've always enjoyed the prequels but they do have their faults and even so, TFA is easily better than TPM and AotC, on par with RotS.
On underlying principle it's a bit worse for lacking originality though. George sure loved using CGI, but Naboo, Couruscant, Geonosis, Kamino, Mustafar were all exotic and exciting places. What's the point of shooting on location if it's just for some dull "new" planets. Not-Tatooine, Not-Yavin, Not-Hoth, and blatantly Ireland. Could've at least set up some Massasi-like temples similar to the ones used on Yavin IV but no, JJ is too lazy for even that

I liked the whole aesthetic of it. The constant rainy surface, the natives, the bright LED halls and rooms, the cloning tubes. Jango was pretty much designed to fit in with it, he looks so out of place of Geonosis

The prequels may not have been the best movies in history, but then neither are the Original Trilogy which surpass the prequels in terms of their execution, but at least the prequels got the tone of the Star Wars mythos right and at least they George was ambitious enough to try things that were different.
In the Original Trilogy by itself, the Empire is just evil for the sake of evil and the Emperor, while a great character as far as embodiments of evil and temptation go, doesn't really have a whole lot of development as to how or why he has the power he does. The only reason we're given why the Empire is evil and needs to be fought (if you exclude the deleted scenes from a New Hope which originally had) is because they speak with accents and blow up whole planets with a death laser.
Does it work, sure. But George at least tried to do something different with the prequels while keeping as much of the original trilogy's spirit as he could by adding political shit that until that point could only be found in the Expanded Universe which tried to add more depth to the Original Trilogy's simplicity. The prequels didn't do a tremendous job, but shit I'll take the Senate scenes in the prequels over that pretentious gibberish in fucking 2003's Matrix Reloaded.

For all the flaws the prequels have, and they have many, they were overall cohesive and original. Most people did not recognize that then, most people simply proceeded to blindly bash them without realizing that they at least had substance to them.
And now that we've been delivered a seriously uncohesive and unoriginal episode VII, it is only natural to appreciate the qualities of the prequels. This is balance. And this will only get worse, this is just the beginning. 2 years from now everyone and his mother will be bashing episode VII for it's plot holes. And goddamn there's a ton of them.

Prequels were full bold, unfiltered Lucas ideas and whether they worked or not, at least the movies felt kind of original and not safe Disney stuff made by jewish commitees and analysists.
TFA is good, maybe even better than prequels, but feels extremely safe and rehashy compared to glorious Lucas mess.
No one is going to make a movie-length analysis of The Force Awakens or any of future Disney Star Wars, unless someone fucks up as bad (if not worse) as Lucas himself.
