I watched Brazil as a youth and laughed at the absurd parody of bureaucratic wastefulness, I watched it again recently and recoiled in horror at how close it was to reality.

Came here to post this. I do admin for retirement plans. Recently MAILED a 200+ page submission to the IRS (could not submit electronically) consisting of 8 different tax forms and two full 401(k) plan documents.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. The other horribly accurate thing about Brazil was its portrayal of how people are harmed by the machine, there are very few actual evil bastards, indeed, there are plenty of people trying to do their job to the best of their abilities but the sheer scale and supposed infallibility of the machine results in incredible damage, both through neglect and through unthinking malice.
