I have no love for Avatarfags shitting up the board every time some tentpole comes along, and would not mind seeing SW take the throne back, but, guise, RotSith made $9 million there in 2005.

So yeah, ten years later and all that, conversion to consumer economy and all that, but the Chinese don;t really dig what is basically a Japanese (they hate each other) origin story about over-throwing governments.

I'm looking for legs and repeat views in NA.

>>63929228
Actually, production and marketing are more than paid for already. They crossed into the black somewhere around 450-480 million. So from here, they are already amortizing the $4 billion capitalized into Lucasfilm. And don't forget the 80% license fee retention from merch, which will be $240 million by Christmas.
>>
>>63929335
He wanted to beat Cameron so badly back in '99, and now someone else will do it with his own creation. George truly is a tragic figure.
>>
>>63929228
The day /tv/ actually knows what the definition of a flop is will be the day hell freezes over
>>
If anyone took /tv/ seriously before the TFA fiasco in which /tv/ was BTFO in devastating fashion, they certainly never will again.

/tv/ is officially dead. TO be quite frank it's been dead for a long time but this is the nail in the coffin. Might as well merge this board with S4S
>>
>>63929280
Okay well let's see,
>400 million dollar budget plus advertising
>4 BILLION dollars to George Lucas
They still need to gain another roughly 3.9 BILLION from the rest of the movies coming out in the consecutive years, and based on Ep. 1 making more money than the other two prequels, this is the last juggernaut opening that Star Wars will see for some time (unless Rogue One and the other spin offs seem appealing to larger audiences)
>>
>>63929438

That's what I'm saying.

George had a hard life. Sure he was pretty bad at writing dialogue and stories but he never asked for this.
>>
Haven't seen either of them and don't think I ever will. Fucks given: 0.
>>
>>63929462
/tv/ was mad because of the forced black/white love story and making the nig a jedi. Neither one of those things happened.
>>
>>63929524
>what are toys
>>
>>63929335
George sees it (rightfully) as his movie. When someone in the premiere said that it wouldn't beat Jurassic World George replied with
>I'll crush you like a bug

>forgetting about merchandise
You're retarded.
>>
>>63929524

>>

They are going to make millions on merchandise and shit too.

I'm pretty fucking sure that Disney has some good people who understand this shit better than some chucklefuck on a Malaysian Basket Weaving Forum.

They are getting well over a billion from ticket sales alone.
>>
>>63929524
They'll be making more based off things like the TV shows, the toys, the video games, books, comics, blu ray sales, everything. Disney will not have to worry one bit about making their money back from the deal and that's if they haven't already.
>>
>>63929594

Their total box office was over two and half times smaller, TFA's performance should settle the issue of whether the franchise has any potential there but simply pointing at RotS isn't as fair as it would seem on its face. Those ten years and growing appetite for consumption are nothing to shrug off.

I get that. TFA is on fewer screen in USA now than China had in 2005 in total, though. The currency disproportion is a bitch too. I saw the Chong cinema house guys talking about 230-300 million. Maybe.

Iger can't be happy about those day to day comps, though, either. SW needs about another 2 million people like me who will wait well into January, when the house is mostly empty and the run is nearly over, then we get there and find there are a hundred people in the hall after all - all thinking the same thing.

Also the film is not yet in India. I have no idea how will it do there.

seriously. the trouble is that Avatar made almost 2.5 times it's domestic gross overseas. it basically did it's own international marketing. TFA is stuck making about the same amount overseas as in the US.

Disney will obviously be fine and will continue to shit up popular culture for years with their warm gruel, but Avatar's record should be safe.

Exactly. This may not be solid 10/10 material but calling it bad is like jumping on the 'guardians of the galexy is worse thing ever meme

Nobody sane actually cares about this. However there's a lot of idiots who just don't like SW fans

>Star Wars
>A franchise where half (or arguably more) of the movies are shit
>People still give it record-breaking box office

That's some damn good Kool-Aid for sure.

>But the EU and the games and all the other media stuff!

Out of those 529M$, how many people ever bothered about the cartoons or the books? Star Wars is a franchise that mostly ride on people not wanting to be left out.

It's a meme franchise in the scientific sense.
>>
>>63932550
>It still hasn't made back close to its budget including the money pit they used for marketing.
>The only revenue that matters is the ticket sales
>There is a threat for it to stop making money at some point

Don't be retarded
>>
>>63932835
The EU and games were brought into existence to fool autists into spending MORE money on the franchise after seeing the movies. The meme came before books, and the books are just for retards who internalized the meme.
>>
>>63931965
Sounds like someone is butthurt.
>>
>>63932550
The $240 million in licensing fees drops straight to the bottom line. So there's your marketing budget right there.

The ticket sales have netted about 220 million to DIS, so there's your production budget.

From here in, they're amortizing the $4 billion paid to George. And the licensing ain't near over.
>>
>>63932920
games are judged differently than films. SW: Battlefront and pre-NGE SWG were/are genuinely good games regardless of the SW IP.
>>
>>63932225

Movie theaters make most of their money on concessions. Doesn't the studio see like 90% of ticket sales on opening weekend? And wouldn't that still put the movie like 50-75 mil in the positive?
>>
>>63932550
You do realize they already made their money back?

Fucking idiot.
>>
>>63933012

>SWG pre-NEG

I buried those memories, the sense of loss, the hopes of what could have been. Why did you have to rekindle my suffering?
>>
>>63932550
Star Wars as a franchise has always printed money, even after 3 shitty movies and George fucking around with the OT for no reason. All Disney have to do is make a few decent movies, they'll be hailed as saving the franchise, and the merch money continues to flow.
>>
>>63932986

>avatar needs to make 5 billion to break even after production, marketing and other expenses

Those were the shitposting days

Even theoretical physicists and mathematicians are baffled by /tv/'s way with numbers when it comes to box office and profit
>>
>>63932550

>Film budget 200 mil plus or minus a little
>Marketing budget around the same
>Movie makes 529 million dollars
>Studio sees 90% of that

Someone's math is off.

Not "no reason", those movies made a shitload of money on the rerelease.

I was born in 83, and so pretty much everyone around my age grew up with star wars, but never having a chance to see it on the big screen.

Even if most nerds had a problem with Han shooting first, most people were happy to put up with it in exchange for what we got. And while a lot of the CGI shit they added aged like milk, at the time it was impressive.

4 billion

and even at 1 billion, anything after is just more money to give away to charities to make yourself look better, you and your entire family for years to come won't get close to spending that amount. 1 billion would setup the next 100 generations.

this movie was so boring and half-assed and the dialogue super cringe worthy.

Too much star wars, this could never live up to the hype.

If you going to have an emo villian at least make him bad ass like Starkiller from the force unleashed. Shit anything in the EU would have been 100 times better. There was even a fucking comic series from Dark Horse better than this tripe.

They needed to make it more adult akin to how Captain America 2 was for cape shit.

Watching Star Wars Rebels is way better than this shit desu senpai

Blind Fanboy jizz presales made the box office but this is really mediocre shit.
>>
>>63929524
It's not like they throw away the IP after one movie.

What is Star Wars Battlefront?
What is Star Wars Rebels?
What is the other two movies of the trilogy?
What is the 3 confirmed anthology movies?

You're so fucking stupid. Filthy contrarian.
>>
>>63938170
Let's just be thankful that your opinions are irrelevant and have no impact on what happens in the movie, because that cringe worthy shit that you just suggested is assuredly worse than anything JJ could have done.
