Not being funny or a troll here... But she isn't a Mary Sue! Stop with these forced lame-ass memes.
She was trained as a kid, but had her memory wiped clean by Luke (or Kylo).
>She may have buried some of her memories too.
She started to remember after the force vision... But I'm sure you'll all figure it out after VIII etc, you slow motherfuckers.
>>63928188
I mean her grandfather is Dooku, a force sensitive mother fucker
>>63928188
She's still a Mary Sue since she has literally 0 character flaws
Go home jj
>>63928216
>Implying massively
>Implying massively
>Implying massively
Fucking top kek! Are you serious right now?
you realize the entire Prequel conception of the force has been retconned right
its no longer some quasi-science you're trained in from childhood but just a mystical force that permeates the galaxy, like in the OT.
abandon your prequel/EU understanding of the force and Rey's magical abilities are right in line with Luke's. if she's mary sue, so is he.
also she was abandoned on Jakku when she was 5, so there isn't going to be a "hurr she was a knight of ren who was mindwiped" or "hurr a jedi prodigy" story.
She isn't Mary Sue, the movie is just rushed. She has to mess around with things to learn them on the ball because she's smart but inexperienced. If the movie weren't so rushed that she had to be able to land the 2nd or 3rd blaster shot out of screen time constraints, they could have had more fun with her pew pewing around.
That being said, people have always had no problem shooting Stormtroopers, so that's not exactly new.
>>63928222
Checked.
Not JJ... And she was flawed, she didn't want the responsibility and she was afraid of the light saber
>>63928260
>accent
>powerful light side user
Explain. Don't tell me you are a Sheevtard or a Lukefag
>>63928370
Guess I'm a "Lukefag" as she's 1000% Luke's daughter!
>>63928414
That'd be retarded and Requim the entire concept that Luke is suppose to be the return of the Jedi. I hope they wouldn't completely obliterate the OT and make this entire trilogy terrible by doing that.
>>63928414
What? The guy you're responding to is 100% out of his mind
But she could easily be Han's daughter.
Why do Leia and Rey hug at the end of the movie after having NEVER met. It's said that Luke was training multiple jedi. Also this is a new hope remake and next movie they want to recreate "Im your father" with "youre my brother"
>>63928414
I didn't know Luke has a British accent. Where'd he pick that up at? Does he fake it?
>>63928306
>If she's a Mary Sue, then so is Luke
Do you people willfully ignore context or what?
>Luke doesn't use a jedi mind trick until RotJ, and it's a big "Oh shit, he's a jedi now" cue.
>Rey not only intuits that she can trick people with the force, but teaches herself how to do it over the span of twenty minutes.
>In Ep IV, Luke only ever wields a lightsaber during training, under the guidance of Obi-Wan
>Rey is arguably already more skilled with a lightsaber in Ep VII than Luke was in Ep V
>Luke is a proficient pilot. His one instance of "force use" in Ep IV was his shot that took out the Death Star.
>Rey is not only capable of flying the Falcon more skillfully than any other character we've ever seen, but she's able to modify/repair the ship better than Han/Chewie within mere moments
The issue is not that Rey "is good at things." It's that she's good at EVERYTHING, IMMEDIATELY in a very specific fan-fiction, author-fantasy-insert type of way. In other words, a Mary Sue.
A glib facsimile
>>63928532
Luke makes the rules now. Why not a little Snu Snu on the side?
>>63928548
Maybe, I don't mind. But I feel like that was an Aunt hug.
>>63928590
She's raised by that British slime ball from Jakku
>>63928591
Maybe.
what's a mary sue
>>63928591
>Rey not only intuits that she can trick people with the force, but teaches herself how to do
it over the span of twenty minutes.
well she realizes that the force can affect one's mind via kylo in the interrogation. Couple that with the myths she mentions she's heard about Jedi and Luke, it's not too much of a stretch for her to give a jedi mind trick a go. And it still takes her a few tries.
>Rey is arguably already more skilled with a lightsaber in Ep VII than Luke was in Ep V
Debatable. Kylo was wounded mentally and physically, and Rey demonstrated she could handle herself in combat earlier in the film. And yea, staff =/= lightsaber, but there's some cross over. And fucking Finn uses the lightsaber twice with decent results and no one jumps on his nuts about it
>Rey is not only capable of flying the Falcon more skillfully than any other character we've ever seen
Lando? And she's all over the place with it on Jakku
>she's able to modify/repair the ship better than Han/Chewie within mere moments
She's been a scavenger 10+ years and grown up around mechanics and pilots. Is it so hard to believe she knows her way around a ship?
>everyone bitching about Rey beating Kylo, mary sue this, mary sue that
>conveniently ignoring the fact Kylo had been shot by Chewie, inhibiting his fighting ability
>the movie makes this evidently clear as Kylo keeps clenching his wound, struggling to stand
That's all there is to it.
>>63928912
I like you.
I, I... might even love you.
>>63928188
no evidence to suggest any of what you said, fanfiction EU garbarge, shes just a mary sue OC dont steal
>>63928912
Yeah but Rey is probably a force prodigy who is presumably going to train under Luke, I doubt Ren is ever going to catch up. This kinda removes a lot of tension and menace from his character.
>>63928855
>>63928912
Each of these things is fine in a vacuum. The problem is that the aggregate effect of all of these things is a perfect swiss army knife of a character.
Yes, they wrote in "reasons" for her to be proficient in everything. That still means they wrote her to be proficient in everything. They still wrote a ridiculously perfect character.
She didn't ONLY beat Kylo Ren. I get that he was injured.
She didn't ONLY pilot and modify the Falcon like a mater pilot/engineer. I get that she's a scavenger.
She didn't ONLY teach herself mindtricks. I understand that she was being "awakened."
My point is that she did ALL of these things, in ONE movie, for no reason other than "our protagonist is the perfect savior."
It reeks of a fanfiction author insert.
>But what Goku didn't know, is that I had senzu beans ready to save everyone
>I was there to help Harry fight Voldemort, with skills that ONLY I HAVE.
>Charles Foster Kane doesn't die alone and defeated because I ALONE HAD THE SPECIAL INFORMATION/SKILLS to save him
>>63929045
hopefully the "final part of his training" that was mentioned by supreme leader whateverthefuck means some ancient sith relic that gives kylo hardcore powers at the expense of his humanity or something. He's already going down the path of 'fuck everything, get powerful' so I think it would fit.
>>63929090
her der, she was mind wiped, yet shows her as a child giving us a little of her backstory, lol nope she was mind wiped, that was just decoy, removing all backstory, fuck offf with your fan fiction made up crap unill there is evidence to suggest it then fuck off
>>63928855
>Lando?
Han get's the ship from Lando.
>>63928414
sorry bud, she's darkside as fuck
she fights like Sheev Himself
She's Darth Revan
Han never said that Kylo Ren was the one who slaughtered Luke's Padawans, because Kylo Ren didn't.
It was Rey
Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren are the survivors and they want their revenge on Rey for killing fucking everyone
>>63928855
even with all of those "reasons" you might be able to justify her being able to do things at a basic level. But she literally does everything a Jedi can do in one movie without being trained and is simply "awakened" somehow which is ridicules.
>>63929155
I understand where you're coming from. She's very capable and comes out on top in this film. Like you said, in the vacuum of this single film, that isn't good. But 7/8/9 viewed as one arc, I think it'll work.
I think (I hope) that this setup of Rey is in service of Ep VIII and IX. We've seen her kick ass, we know what she capable of, so when she hits her eventual barriers (be they kylo or otherwise), seeing her struggle thru them will be that much more interesting and rewarding. It also gives Kylo somewhere to go, a la my post here: >>63929164
>>63929257
They're not doing a very good job.
>>63928188
>memory wiped clean by Luke (or Kylo).
hahaha this is worse than time travelling parallel universe star trek retcons
i thought the prequels were badly written but holy fuck...
>>63929200
I really can't tell which of these folks are trolling and which ones REALLY can't see how absurdly overpowered Rey is as a character.
>Well luke destroyed the death star with his eyes closed you shitlord!
That was not only the culmination of his entire arc in that film, but it was THE ONLY THING Luke succeeded at in Ep IV, and only after Obi-Wan encourages him from beyond the grave
>Lando flew it too!!!!
You covered this.
>>63929317
Preach it brother.
>>63929195
Try harder next time, Bud.
>>63929200
and we see Lando very capably pilot the falcon in Jedi. That was my point.
>>63928855
I think the problem is that Rey seems relatively much more competent then everyone in the movie, while Luke was also kind of a Mary sue, he didn't eclipse everyone. Han was more streetwise, Obi had a Jedi stature that Luke would only gain in Jedi, and Vader still was intimidating. Rey seems to know more about the falcon then Han and humiliates Ren.
The problem with Rey is that she's so competent that she is able to solve problems quickly and even if she makes mistakes, their quickly corrected without consequences as severe as for other characters. She has an interesting internal conflict, but she resolves that in the movie. The only thing I find interesting now is her parentage, which is external to her. There seems a lot less room for growth compared to a character like Ren.
>>63928855
yeah no, Luke knew the force could lift an X wing out of a lake but it did fuck all for him against Vader. Mary Sue Rey used a sophisticated Mind persuasion technique against an ACTIVE FORCE USER WHO who was proficient enough in the force to stop a bolt in mid air which was a technique never demonatrated by even Jedi Masters who would have needed said ability in AOTC and ROTS---and yet Mary Sue Rey out forces him in all of five minutes BECAUSE SHE SAW Kylo use said force ability. So I should be able to play Eddie Van Halen's respect for the in all of five minutes without an ounce of practice or time or anything. I mean Luke took a year plus following his first battle with Vader to become a proficient knight but Mary Sue Rey did it all in five minutes.
>>63929373
> it was THE ONLY THING Luke succeeded at in Ep IV
Remember that scene with the little floaty training ball? He goes from not being able to block a single shot to blocking 4 in a row with his eyes closed?
>>63929230
Actually she fights like Obi Wan. It also sounds like Ben Kenobi says "Rey" during the force visions.
>Creating Mary Sue characters is okay when Disney does it
It's annoying in every piece of fiction there is. It's part of what makes Twilight so unbearable and why Sonic OCs are so autistic.
>>63929451
that's a valid point. Though Poe is ridiculously OP in an x-wing.
I still think her real challenges will come later in the series. At least they fuckin better. If they don't, I'll be firmly i nthe mary sue camp with you guys
>>63929551
>Implying that she's Obi's daughter or granddaughter you are?
Good one.
>>63929573
Off topic/point in so many ways...
Why are you so grumpy, Anon?
>>63929535
Are you fucking serious? You're using a training sequence, something that our little Rey is too good for, to make your point?
Luke makes incremental progress, under the training of a skilled Jedi.
I'm surprised they didn't have Rey beat Chewbacca at holochess and then tear HIS arms off.
>>63929578
Poe is also a trained pilot who trained to be a pilot, for his job, of being a fucking pilot. If rey had acted in accordance with her experience being a scavenger and not magically turned into a sharpshooter swordsman pilot, then nobody would complain.
>this lightsaber belonged to Luke's father, who passed it down to Luke, and now it calls to you
>Leia knowingly hugs her after her safe return, despite the two never directly speaking before
But I wonder who her family is lol.
>>63929734
That's a really good point. Had she outsmarted Kylo Ren by tinkering with his mask or rigging booby-traps in the forest or something it actually would have been awesome.
Have the official a cute Rey webm,
Why did she have an English accent? Ruined every scene she was in for me. Everyone else is talking very plain and frank and then the fucking orphan scavenger from the junkyards of a dirt planet starts speaking like a proper Briton.
>>63929792
>yfw luke banged leia and rey is super powerful because both her parents were force sensitive
>>63929734
Congrats, I'm glad we agree about Poe. Funny how people can just infer he had prior training and knowledge but cant make the same mental leap when it comes to Rey's prior mechanical knowledge of the falcon and other such things. Force use aside, of course.
But like I said that you all seem to be ignoring: My hope is that her real challenges won't manifest until 8 and 9. 7 was all setup.
>>63929858
Calm down there Jaime Lannister...
>>63929852
Her voice seems quite evil to me, and her music had darkside undertones I've heard, so I think she's being set up as a villain
>>63928188
I see we have started to make shit up in order to defend poor character development.
Look the problem is she shouldn't have been able to use all different kinds of force powers and also defeat the bad guy in a lightsaber fight during the last 30 minutes of the first movie.
They should have saved that shit for the sequel, specially because she ends up going to train with Luke at the end anyway.
>>63929931
>Funny how people can just infer he had prior training and knowledge but cant make the same mental leap when it comes to Rey's prior mechanical knowledge
are you really this fucking dense? Poe was a Pilot from the very beginning and also being a scavenger doesn't not automatically a mechanical wizard.
>>63929451
Well, she did hit the wrong fuses, releasing a bunch of tentacle monsters. It worked out, but it was a legit mistake that got a bunch of people killed.
She was also wrong about which ship to escape in. As the shiny metal prequel-type ship got blown up, and if they had started towards it earlier, would've gotten them blown up with it. Or if they had been able to get off the planet in it, they never would've encountered han and chewie, as they were specifically looking for the falcon in a ship specifically designed to capture smaller ships and pulling odd jobs to keep that ship flying.
Also with the "bypassed the compressor" scene, there was a "wait, what?" moment afterwards, as if rey realized she had no idea how she knew to do that.
Shes somewhat defensible, but the surface of the character is entirely as people are describing it. Strong woman that does everything better than men. Basically just a jerk off of third wave feminist fantasy. She seems a bit more reasonable once you start reading into it, but eventually you hit a point where you realize shes specifically being put into situations where she would excel because the character was designed for those situations.
You can also argue since the mind-reading/force-compelling between rey and ren was clearly two-way, she pulled a lot of his experiences with the knowledge of his fears.
Its basically just mediocre writing. Not good, not bad, but serviceable, kinda. Basically JJ's wheelhouse.

>>63928912
The wound wasnt a factor in the fight. Literally 0 significance. If it was Kylo's injury that decided the fight, Rey would be beating his ass from the very beginning, which wasnt the case at all.
Kylo was kicking her ass easily up until she has her little meditation "oh, the force" moment and then suddently she totally owned him. That heavily heavily implies she beat him because she is way stronger with the force than him.
It's just shit writing. The wound should have a factor. She should have landed a kick in his wound or something which could have turned the tides instead of that fucking cheesy meditation.
That's all there is to it.

You also can't just dismiss the fact he took a shot from a bowcaster, just killed his father, got stabbed in the shoulder, and was going easy on her intentionally. Plus, Kylo Ren isn't very good with a lightsaber. He takes long unwieldy slashes with his lightsaber that leaves him vulnerable and allows someone as quick as Rey to get a couple pokes in.

That's funny cause I am Rey and it's true.
I watched it today, and caught something I'd missed in the first view.
Rey. had. piloted. before.
She says to Finn that she never had done outspace piloting, in the scene they kept talking without stop to each other so it's easily to miss.
And that's not the only hint she can or/is interested in it either, since we can see her with the helm in the beginning.
Also, she isn't a good shooter. She missed all her shots, except that one stormtrooper.
And could only "win" against Kylo after he was heavily bleeding and asked for the force to help her, and even then she was lucky he wasn't trying to really hurt her.
Fuck you guys.
>>63931041
>Plus, Kylo Ren isn't very good with a lightsaber.
Not to mention the design is such that he has no choice but to use a "broadsword" style of combat against a person with what essentially amounts to a fencing blade with the exact same weight and strength.

The only reason he even survived was because the ground conveniently split up between them.
Also i love the fact that Kylo can literally paralyze people using the force, but for some reason he seems to forget that he has that power.
That final fight was extremely dumb.
>>63931133
The fight was a dark side force user keeping himself upright and fighting through sheer force of will with a giant hole in his gut, and, at the end, suddenly running out of steam.
Force of will is basically the entire idea behind the dark side.

Getting unlucky and getting your ass kicked is two different things. Also, Kylo Ren didn't almost die. He was dazed for a moment and sat up. Plus, he could have stopped it any moment he wanted to.

>>63931590
I like how you people keep talking about the mindwipe like anything in the movie indicated it.
Obviously her memories are deleted and replaced like Revan. She may have even been a Knight of Ren. Look at this excerpt from the novelization.
>It IS you!
He recognized her somehow from somewhere.
Not to mention all of the companion material for the movie is KOTOR as fuck. Rakata Prime is in the Force Awakens planet encyclopedia for some reason, and it is a planet with ancient Force artifacts, crumbling buildings, and is a water world dotted by archipelago. You find it with a piece of Star Map hidden in Droid T3 in KOTOR. In Force Awakens the star map piece was hidden in bb8.
In the same encyclopedia it states that Kylo Ren's broadsword saber is from the Scourge of Malachor V, the planet the Exile and Revan destroyed and is a main focal point of KOTOR II.
The lower half of Rey's clothing is identical to Bastila.
The entire film is a homage to OT and KOTOR. I would not be surprised if Luke messed with her memory.

Nobody is trivializing.
If that shot really affected that much in the battle, then the movie failed really badly at conveying that.

That shot was irrelevant.

I don't think you know what a mary sue is.
its okay, the term is colloquial as fuck and originating from fan fiction communities, and like every colloquial term, thrown around to the point where it loses all meaning, to the point where any time a character is competant, someone calls "WHY ISN'T SHE BITCHING ABOUT HER PERIOD??! MARY SUE!!"

It's just poor character development. I don't think they intended her to be a Mary Sue.
She shouldn't have been able to do all that force stuff AND fight using the lightsaber AND defeat the bad guy in one fucking movie.
The next movie she will get her ass kicked (i hope).
>>63931319
Are you a fucking retard? Luke tried several times to lift the X Wing out of the swamp and Yoda had to help him.
Just because she failed before hand, getting it right in the hour of need when it mattered makes her a Mary Sue.

>>63931896
Eh? The Force Awakens had a novelization, I posted a screen grab of the part. Albeit it was kind of bad, the author used adverbs and the word "murmured" too often, but it did clarify shit like why Ren wasn't troubling himself over his idol going light side before his death.

It was when she meditated in her Mary Sue force powers that she started winning.

It's pretty much the same scene.

>>63929826
That's one of my favorite scenes from the movie, in fact, I could watch an entire movie about Rey's life on Jakku. That was just something about her exploring big fallen space ship, enduring the harsh lonely life of a slave scavenger,

It's not like he had a talking ghost telling him how to do things like force grab a lightsaber.
>>63932460
Best direction possible.
The honest to god truth (and I swear I'm not trolling) is that she's a mary sue because she's a fucking girl. No one would have a problem if Rey was a guy.
You're all also acting like she's going to be the main character, when Finn takes up half of the fucking movie in the beginning, we all just forget about that because Rey dominates the second half with her (albeit lack of) character development.
Not to mention that this is so obviously a set up/"grab people's attention" movie that the other two movies are more than likely going to have more character development in them since the writers aren't constrained with introducing the characters and appealing to the masses.
>>63932155
>Luke was trained for 3 years at that point
No he fucking wasn't. He got like 3 weeks worth of training from Obi-Wan before vader carved his old ass up and was left to figure shit out on his own until he met Yoda. Him learning Force Pull was some shit he made up on the spot so that he wouldn't get eaten.

>>63928188
GUYS. There are 2 possible reasons for her Mary Sue-ness
A. She gets far without trying inspiring kylo to try harder which in turn puts him above her making him seem more powerful than he would have otherwise
B. She becomes a villain
>>63932490
yep. I really don't want rey to be a skywalker or a solo. this could be explained by an AWAKENING in the force. The is just popping back up in people. She's not space jesus, born of a virgin. She was just born with force powers that started manifesting later in her life. Maybe the force reacted to kylo ren and all that.. The point is she doesn't need a direct relation to luke or han or anyone else. Her parents leaving her should be addressed, but make it more original.
>>63932490
Not really.
Specially since this direction they are going towards, seems to amount to copying and rehashing as much shit from the OT as possible.
>>63932463
>it's shit writing
>that explains it!
>>63929529
This. People comparing Luke to rey are fucking ridiculous. Luke fails at fighting Vader the first time, has to leave and train on some backwoods planet for months in order to beat him, and still has trouble, and doesn't really defeat him. And that's after multiple movies of lightsaber and force practice. And everything that he does is within his realm of expertise: piloting and the force. There is apparently nothing outside Rey's realm of expertise.
>>63932558
Whatever you need to believe to prove to yourself that Rey is not a Mary Sue. Go for it.
>>63932627
meant to say
>the force is just popping back up in people
>>63932594
There's two more:
C. Bad character development and storytelling
trigger warning
D.She's just a Mary Sue
>>63932627
I personally like the idea the force is popping up randomly due to the extremely small number of force users in the setting.
But, ya know, they did cast someone who looks like a cross between carrie fischer and natalie portman...
>>63928332
That's a mental issue, doesn't stop her from instantly being proficient when she does decide to use it.
She's a Mary Sue because you can't show women being incompetent at something or even untrained because then your film is misogynist unless you get their expressed written opinion like mad max got
>>63932594

God I hope not. That shit would be fucking lame.
Her becoming the newest Jedi Knight is going to be Luke's "redemption" after he failed so hard with Ben Organa/Solo. Calling it now.

i don't think so, especially since they already had a reveal like that with kylo ren. It would feel stupid if the next is just: oh and ALSO your dad is luke! just like kylo ren's dad was Han!
And they casted a very pretty girl, she looks more like a prettier keira knightly to me. Like rey has the same smile, but better looking overal as i see it
>>63932673
It's literally in the OT. Maz Yoda even tells Rey all she has to do is let the Force in, since it's actively seeking her out.
But whatever.
>it's the force, I don't have to explain shit.
>>63932884
That's one of the biggest problems with trying to make movies today. The studios are so afraid getting backlash they let their fear affect the work and we end up getting unrealistic and uninteresting characters in the process.

This is just another example of the writing sucking complete dick. Good thing that ship just happened to get blown up, or the plot wouldn't fucking exist. Good thing the ships were too busy missing due to plot armor than just fucking shooting them instead of the ship they were running toward.

KoToR II with the restored content mod is the better game desu senpai. That's just my opinion though man.
I only just now watched it. I think Rey wasn't as bad as I'd been reading, but she was a bit of a Mary Sue, it's true.
I'd say they could have fixed that just by changing one thing - have her fail at the Jedi Mind trick. It shouldn't have worked, and he would go to tighten her restraint and as he did that she manages to get free or something.
When she reverse mind-reads Kylo, I can buy that because like, the conduit is already there, since Kylo started it. Maybe she could do that on the fly, but the mind trick you would surely need training to mind trick. The lightsaber fighting is fine too, since she can fight with the staff, and Kylo is hurt.
Her defining trait is that of a sort of tinkerer, I'd say. I don't mind the fixes she did to the Falcon. I feel like she shouldn't have been such a good pilot too, though.

>>63931276
Yes, that would have worked if he wasn't outpowering her anyways until she did the meditation thing. That means that even if Rey is weaker than Kylo at his best, the reason Kylo lost is not the wound, but the meditation.
I've said this before, but if when she started meditating it only allowed her to withstand Kylo's attakcs (as if Kylo were the training droid) it would have made more sense and she would have been a tad bit less Mary Sue-ish.

That is stupid and you know it. You don't use 'training' as an excuse for the ability to be better than everyone at everything and have zero flaws. It's just a bad character.
People shat over aniken for being DA BEST PILOT, DA BEST FORCE USER, DA BEST JEDI, DA BEST SITH, and people are doing the same for Rey.
It has nothing to do with male, female, boy, girl, or anything. It's boring characters with no flaws who remove the tension from everything
>'Oh shit, it's Kylo. He is fucking pissed and working himself into a frezy, this is gonna be great, I wonder how Rey is going to get out of this. Maybe she'll do something clever, or get saved o-'
>'Oh, she just literally beat him in a one on one fight. Okay. Nevermind. I guess she is stronger than him already. Why is he a villain again?'
>>63936313
That's not a flaw. That's a background.
>>63936673
Go listen to some more Dido, ya' girl!
>>63928188
>She was trained as a kid, but had her memory wiped clean by Luke (or Kylo).
We don't know that, it's just a theory. Until that's confirmed, Rey is a character who is good at just about everything for no apparent reason (except for being a good mechanic, which makes perfect sense).
>>63928216
This is probably true, why else even keep the prequels canon or tell Finn's actor only Rey can be British?
>>63936645
The problem is that the erased memory story line is incredibly stupid if true .
>>63928188
This doesn't help her case for not being a Mary Sue. It explains why but it's still a hilariously dumb explanation
Think about it, she was left on Jakku at like, 5 years old, maybe? That would mean she trained as a Jedi even earlier than that. Which means that she was such a ridiculously fast learner that she was able to master mindtricking, wielding a lightsaber, mindprobing, and telekinesis at a level that surpasses Luke for two movies in the OT, at an age where most toddlers don't know the difference between their right and their left hand. It also recycles the dumb idea from the prequels that kids are kidnapped by the Jedi at birth and are trained in the force as a babby
>>63936645
Fuck off, swallow disney shit, im out
>>63936673
Mary Sue/Gary Stus are characters that are the bestest at everything and do no wrong (or very little wrong) and generally have zero flaws.
If a character is flawed but eventually overcomes those flaws to do something, it's called having an arc.
Solving a problem is not a character arc, and it's not a flaw. Being sad your family left and not wanting to leave your home are not flaws, they're background/character information. Something she gets over pretty fucking quickly too.
>>63936595
I cant' tell whether you are trolling or not.
But people took a massive shit on Analkin Skywanker.
>>63929257
>She's Darth Revan
No, she's Jaina without the personality. And Kylo is just a lamer version of Jacen.
>>63936744
why else even keep the prequels canon?
huh.. because they were made by george lucas?
>>63936712
She literally sucked in the fight between her and Kylo.
Kylo would have smacked her silly if he wasn't a massive emotional vengeance filled, hateful little boy.
- She only won because Kylo was injured
- She only won because she focused herself and Kylo didn't.
Ya' dig?
>>63936645 see >>63936712
This guy gets it, the whole movie is trash
>>63936772
Stay mad. You know I'm right, it's just too hard for you to admit.
>>63936799
I'm trolling. The guys comment I was responding too was stupid so I was being sarcastic
>>63932281
Mary Sues don't have to be self inserts, you can also insert your perfect waifu.
Christ, /tv/ is full of nostalgia-obsessed edgelords.
>>63936783
>solving a problem is not a character arc
You mean basically solving a problem that is independent of a character's personal flaws? For ex., fixing the millenium falcon
>>63936895
Try harder next time, alright?
Wait, don't. You'll give yourself a fucking hernia
>>63928306
More like in the OT and the new sequels everyone is incompetent because the Jedi were destroyed and all their knowledge with them. Luke was never properly trained, he would be defeated even by a youngling trained in the glory days of the jedi order.
>>63936816
Then why tell Finn only Rey can be British? Why is Dooku the only British one in the movie? It's all starting to add up.
>>63936925
from a certain point of view
>>63936842
>She only won because Kylo was injured
Except Kylo was hitting his own wound because the dark side is powered by anger, hate, pain, loss, sadness, and shit like that. If anything, it should have made him go fucking crazy and trounce her.
>She only won because she focused herself and Kylo didn't.
So, basically, if she stops and thinks for all of 30 second she can defeat someone who has been training for far longer and should be far stronger?
>>63928927
LUKE?!
>>63928188
Dude that is literally what a Mary Sue is. A character who some how had a history with all the key players in a story and for some reason is skilled at literally everything.
>>63936677
But she has worked all her life with machines/tech stuff. She learned to be a pilot on here planet.

>So, basically, if she stops and thinks for all of 30 second she can defeat someone who has been training for far longer and should be far stronger?
Let me re-word this for you.
So, basically, if HE (Kylo) stops and thinks for all of 30 second HE can defeat someone who has been training for FAR LESS (Rey) and should be MUCH WEAKER?
>>63936895
The movie was still good regardless of that. Fin was one of the best characters in the movie if you ask me.
>>63934023
This whole "Blaster Crossbow" must be hella OP or something.
There is no other explenation. I do not buy this whole "Ren was mentaly damaged". He did what he wanted to join dark side.
He got caught by Chewie. That's all.
>>63936645
Even Anakin had to, over time, and after wrecking several pods, get good the hard way. The only edge the force gave him was a faster reaction time and even with that he failed for a long time for even his mother and his boss lamented and complained of how he wrecked several pods. it took a while to master pod racing and at the very end during the final battle, he was taken into orbit into the battle via remote wire and then took the controls that were, even he said they were, not unlike pod racer controls, and with his TRAINED ability Anakin avoid obstacles and dangers and accidentally landed on the battle cruisers deck and when defending himself versus dozens of droids he accidentally hit a fuel tank and then bolted out of there when the over heated engines were cooled down enough.
Luke demonstrated almost no force ability at all in IV other than using the training balls and listening to Obi Wan's voice that encouraged him to use the force in order to fire his pay load at the right time. That's it. he didn't use the force to put the pay load down the chute. the force simply told him when to shoot and he did. he was saved continually by everyone, obi wan saved him from the raiders where as Rey smashed her attackers. and at the very end, his back was protected by several pilots who sacrificed themselves and then Han saved him again.
and don't get me started about the trials and tribulations he endured in V. Not Mary Sue Rey who could master any force ability by just seeing it. BULLSHIT character!
I'm an avid star wars fan, but not a fan of the books
have we ever seen vulcan mind melds before this movie?
>>63936718
>>63936499
Okay. Fair enough. I agree that she's OP as fuck, but I tend to see that as the inevitable consequence of the fact that The Force is the ultimate plot armor, either because the Force is stronger with someone, or (more annoyingly) it was the will of the Force that a person win.
>>63937052
Sure that's a great attribute for the foundation of a character, but we want to see her develop based off that, not be 100% competent at everything right away.
>>63936842
And she had more experience fighting people with weapons that could actually, y'know, block them. How many times has Kylo actually fought someone in a lightsaber doel? He usually justseems to hack and slash peeps rather than actually fighting them. Rey's combat training was GROWING up regulalry having to fight off people with her stick thing. If kylo had no force or saber could he beat off two guys trying to take him down like rey does?
>>63937126
A black stormtrooper who also has the ability to control the force out of nowhere? No thanks pleb
>>63936993
>>63937063
Don't tell me you didn't laugh, because I did! Just thinking about your srcumpled disdain filled face as you read my comment.
>>63936842
Let me ask you anon, how threatening of a villain can Kylo be if a wookie and a rookie jedi are an even match for him ?
>>63937196
Considering his official title is literally "Jedi Killer", I think you can answer that on your own bud. That new order of Jedi certainly didn't genocide itself.
>>63937196
It can be argued that he should've had training with lightsaber shit (with Luke, and Snoke possibly). But at the same time, I don't think he's ever encountered an opponent who was supposedly really strong with the force
>>63937204
Being Force sensitive would be an explanation for why he broke free of the brainwashing.
>>63937222
>>63937204
No where in the film was it ever suggested or shown that he could use the force. Just because you use a lightsaber doesn't mean you are force sensitive.
>>63937254
Do not underestimate the power of a Wookie
>>63936976
Obiwan was british too
>>63937254
>how threatening of a villain can Kylo
He was supposed to be gradually humanized and become less threatening as the story progressed.
Less monster = more sympathy
>>63937282
Not checking my 222. What's up with that?
>>63937290
This. Anyone could use a lightsaber. But Force sensitivity is typically required for one to be better than the average person.
>>63937164
>>63937164
there wasn't the will of the force in this case. Disney wanted a Mary sue to get girls to become fans of star wars. Every other person over the course of six movies had to become great through trial and error and pain and suffering and effort and practice. E V E R Y O N E else other than Mary Sue Rey!
>>63937268
Then why he discovered he was force sensitive until adulthood? Sounds like bullshit to me
>>63935689
No, it's not garbage. It's well structured and entertaining, even if it's flawed plot and story-wise and not as good as it could have been.
>>63937132
It uses actual metal crossbow bolts propelled by a miniature railgun. That was why Kylo was bleeding profusely as opposed to a cauterized wound.
So yes, it is a lot more powerful, and blocking it would be different than blocking a ball of energy/plasma.
>>63937374
>>63937314
There's a fine line between a sympathetic but dangerous opponent, and a whiny bitch with no talent.
Kylo is pretty clearly the Vergil to Rey's Dante, and yet lost to her so completely and thoroughly that he'll never be that much of an actual threat. Nevermind the fact that he's technically way better than she is, it doesn't even make sense from a writing standpoint. An antagonist trounced during his first fight with the protagonist isn't threatening, he's a one man team rocket.

>>63937566
Literally this.
You can make all the excuses you want:
>B-B-B-B-BUT WOUND
>B-B-B-BUT DEAD DAD
But he'll never be scary or threatening ever again because he lost his very first fight against the protagonist. He is ruined as a villain. Why would I ever feel tension in a scene with him again?
>>63931093
Also we have to remember that the only reason Kylo got shot was because he was emotionally rattled after killing his father, thus was taken by surprise.
>>63935049

>Kingsman also has a protagonist who is useless at the start of the movie and is an invincible badass by the end of the film.
Said protagonist was extremely agile from the start and spent about half the movie training.
All the points this idiot makes are completely retarded.
>>63938115
That's why they're journos and not story writers because they couldn't understand the basic concept of making a relateable character
